The Redkens I've used, if I'm remembering correctly, have a strong musky/cologne smell that I didn't care for much. The hold was good though.

Fuck a female stylist or owner and you get free haircuts for life, it is what I did. Plus they generally know what looks good on you, seeing how that is their job.

ah yeah, most of the redken/american crew stuff has a manly cologne smell, although I feel like for Redken's shampoo that's a bonus. This is the redken pomade I used to use, great if you want pomade + shine instead of a more matte look:

It's cheesy, but A&F Fierce will always be my favorite.

Faux-Hawks look fine if you can pull it off, honestly it's one of the few hairstyles that I can do because of my receding hair line.

I have a terrible time styling my hair at all once it is out of the really short stage. When it's really short all I really have to do is get my hand wet and slick it through my hair to make it stand up, make sure it dries like that and thats finished. When it starts getting a little longer I'll sometimes throw it into a faux hawk. When it starts getting into that medium stage I choose to give myself wings.

Pic I posted in the RL pic thread.

    Spoiler: show

As you can see above my ears i have my hair curl up, when my bangs get longer I do it there too, and I kinda get the hairstyle that the singer from incubus has, just not quite as good looking because my hair is so thin. As you can see from my bangs that it's gettin pretty thin right there, if i comb it straight down, it looks thin because there isn't enough to cover the whole area. If i comb it off to the side a little, it covers up that one side and then i have a giant forehead on the otherside. It's a pretty lose lose situation for me.

Dude's face was fucktarded, hair is good though.
That's basically what I do when my hair is really short, however it doesn't look nearly as good as that due to being thinner. I envy people with nice thick hair that can do sweet hair styles like that.

On a last note, I've spiked my hair up when it was really long too Sath, hair was down to my shoulders and we did liberty spikes using unflavored gelatin. I lost a lot of hair that day but it looked pretty sweet. Wish I had a picture of it =\

OP, as mentioned before go to a stylist and just talk with them for a few minutes about what your hair does (curly, wavy, straight, flat, wiry, fine, etc) and what you might like to do with it. Use their experience and knowledge to guide what they can do for you. Not all hairstyles work for all types of hair, not to mention how they fit with your face's shape and dimensions.

Even at fancy salons where women get charged $100+ for a haircut, most guys can get away with about $40. If it's a cut you can let grow out, that $40 might last you two or more months, so it's pretty good value for the usually skilled and experienced work you get. Pretty much at any shop there will be someone who particularly likes cutting men's hair, so ask and you'll probably get a recommendation.

All in all, men's hair seems to be going through a retro-modern trend similar to clothing. If that's your style then go for it. I'm not a fan of the $100 bed-head look myself, it just comes off as both juvenile and narcissistic - but I'm probably over thinking it.

And if all else fails, you can always go to the barber and get the clippers. Might be the best look for you.

The dudes saying talk to your stylist are right, having even a five minute conversation with them is going do loads better than walking in, pointing to a picture and grunting. Second thing is keep going back to the same stylist, because it is their job to adjust and learn what you did / didn't like about the cut and work from there. I went to the same stylist for nine years before I moved, and together we pretty much made up a haircut that fit my hair / head shape / style, and even better, one that grows out without looking retarded. I haven't had my hair cut since July and you can't tell stylistically, though I'm getting to the point where I need to at least get the ends trimmed.

But seriously, just talk to your stylist or barber. I've been going to the same barber for 10 years, minus when I cut my afro off after high school I get the same haircut that fits my head type and he knows how to do it perfectly.

Woo I know I've already discussed my uhh, stylist in IAS before, but really I tend to trust them. They're professionals, they go through a pretty fair amount of training that they actually have to keep up with after they're accredited, typically I ask for their input. If I want to try something different usually she starts off with trying something a bit longer, then clipping it down a bit at a time til it's a length I like...that and if I realize I expressly dislike it within a day or two they'll generally touch it back up for free as long as you don't wait like a week or two.

I can tell I'm an obvious by-product of having a relative cut your hair all your life now, and I don't think my aunt

is going to cut it anymore.

But really yeah, she's been doing it for ages and whether we just talk about it or I try to bring something in as a guide on what I like stylistically, I've only won out a handful of times in those exchanges so I think I'll have to try just finding someone new and start over like a normal person.
