    25th Anniversary Wii soft modding?

    http://i55.tinypic.com/25qu51x.jpg

So I'm trying to set this system up, I've read the new "Red" Wii's have D3/D4 chip or something on the PCB that prevents disc loading/burned games.

My question is, is USB loading the only way possible at the current time? Tried Googlan and I'm seeing mixed results.

Also any suggestions on a good message board primarily focused on Wii modification? (Similar to XDA in the fashion of smartphones/etc.)

Yes, USB Loading is your only option. Unless you have an external DVD drive as there is one specific loader that can use one.

You seem pretty knowledgeable so I'll just throw this your way.

Is the "Smash Bros." exploit the only way to get started? I noticed the Yu-Gi-Owned, Indiana Jones Lego exploits but it said the Super Smash Bros one was the best (unbreakable).

Super Smash Bros. is easily the easier way to get it done. It's harder for Nintendo to fix because it isn't a save game exploit.

Heh, Nintendo finally got around to patching the bannerbomb exploit?

"Bannerbomb is an exploit capable of launching homebrew from the System Menu version 4.2 or below. It was created by Comex to replace the Twilight Hack, which does not work on System Menu 4.0.
NOTE: The original Bannerbomb exploit does not work with System Menu 4.2, it only works with System Menu 4.1 or older. However Bannerbomb v2 has been released by Comex, and works on 4.2. No version of Bannerbomb works on System Menu 4.3 or newer; use Smash Stack or Indiana Pwns instead."

Is this in regards to physical modding? I don't know how XDA relates to smartphones so the correlation's lost on me, but if you don't already know of them, wiihacks and gbatemp's wiihacking board are the ones I use as general softmodding boards.

There is no reason to softmod a wii for any other reason than attaching a USB hard drive and playing games from it. Putting discs in your wii is a waste of time if it's softmodded.

Next, always use Smash Stack if you can (I'm still trying to find a copy of Smash Bros. that isn't full price or is available brand new and not OMGUSED legit). It's unbeatable because it's not save-game related, it's all about the coding in the level maker. Indiana Pwns is hard to fix as well because of where it's at in-game.

It's totally worth it. I've been playing Donkey Kong and all the newest games without even updating because Priiloader and USB loaders eliminate disc-checks and region-checks.

Little bump for anyone wanting to get SSBB for Wii. Go to Gamefly, apply for the 10 day trial, get free game, mod wii, send back :3

Sorry to bump but I have a question. There're a bunch of USB Loaders apps out there, which one do you guys recommend?

I found "Configurable USB Loader" to be pretty great, and the guide I found to be the most helpful also uses that: http://gwht.wikidot.com/

The main ones used are configurable USB loader and USB GX. Both are great depending on the circumstances and your preferences. I have had zero problems with USB GX on all recent releases.

Hmm, lot of people who seem to know their stuff here with the wii homebrew, so maybe one of you can help me...

I did up the whole homebrew thing back in April and loaded WiiFlow on it; I used bannerbomb, but beyond the bannerbomb installation and the homebrew channel itself the instructions were convoluted and I'm not sure if I maybe went overboard in the whole thing or what. Regardless, I now can't get new updates to the system menu, which prevents me from getting to the shop channel to download things like the netflix app and cool new games :<

It's not a problem with the internet connection actually connecting, as I can connect to see if there's a new update, and the shop channel intervenes and tells me there is one as well. But whenever I try to run system update, even after removing all the homebrew bits, the update fails almost instantly. Also, using the 'reset to defaults' function in the system menu doesn't fix it.

    Halp?

Not really sure why system updates would fail entirely instead of updating and removing homebrew access and possibly bricking, but I think this will help: http://gwht.wikidot.com/wii-shop

Maybe your package installed that thing that blocks entirely any NAND update, forgot name. There is a thread somewhere that has all the .wads for Shops etc but I don't remember where, I installed them with WAD manager on my sister's Wii and it bypassed all the updates.

I think I made a NAND backup before I did it; if I restored that would it go back to normal? I don't mind working around it with the .wads but dislike leaving something in a broken state like that :<
