I'm only guessing, but a guy who has written a guide to exactly how to molest children and get away with it is probably someone who is doing harm to society as a whole simply through his actions (i.e. he's probably fucking children, not just writing about it). but you're right, we don't know for sure - it's only a guess in this case. and we shouldn't imprison people on a guess, without specific evidence of wrongdoing.

although to be fair, have you freaking seen his picture? if it doesn't scream cho-mo, I don't know what does - except for the book he wrote, I mean.

I don't believe I'm morally confused. I'm morally against child rape (or rape in general) as well as child pornography, but I also believe that people should have the freedom to express their opinions via writing or talking without persecution or prosecution. There are other instruction manuals out there on how to do other terrible things. There are several books published about how to make booby traps, homemade explosives, killing, etc. Hell we issue one such book to every person in the armed forces. If this guy's book truly is a manual on how to rape children (and having not read it I'm not sure it is), then I don't see how the potential damage it may cause is any worse than the other examples I mentioned. Knowledge without action is harmless. It is the actions that cause the damage, and therefor it is the actions that are/should be illegal.

It's not just actions, it's the intent of said actions, or even intent of mere words that carry weight too. So your example is the anarchist cookbook doesn't really work, since it could be easily used for say, fighting oppression. Which is certainly not outside the realm of ethical behavior. unlike child molestation. I mean, really guys? Are you that confused about it?

What about surgeon guides, I mean, we really should defend those with the 1st amendment, since it talks about cutting people open.
