FCC Meeting In Regards To Net Neutrality (Goodbye Freedom Edition)

So the meeting just ended, you can read up on the details at
    http://www.savetheinternet.com/FCCmeeting

In short: The Gov has approved of ISP Tier Subscriptions. You all rememeber those posts from ATT, Comcast, etc saying theyre going to charge extra for certain subscriptions, bandwidth, etc? Well now it's ok for them to do so. This all applies to CellPhones too.

    Quick Summary of the meeting:
    http://www.freepress.net/press-relea...opportunity’

The in depth article explaining all the facets of the meeting will be posted later today at http://www.savetheinternet.com/ and http://www.freepress.net/

Is now null and void. Obama once again goes back on what he's said in the past, as he ignores 2 million signed petitions.

I'm not surprised. Are you surprised? Is anyone surprised? Any time it's big business vs. the average citizen, the average citizen will lose every time. There has to be some colossal, insanely ridiculous fiasco of Enron magnitude in order for the government to do something. Otherwise they'll turn a blind eye as long as lobbyists throw enough money at them. As long as this country is run by corporations and not by the people, as it's supposed to, we will continually be fucked over.

This is disappointing. Once again consumers will be (further) forced to chose between the lesser of evils (as if that wasn't already the case).

Wait I am confused. Not that it is the only source of news I read but CNN is basically saying the exact opposite of this thread.

It is saying that the new rules the FCC passed today prevent the thing that you are saying the FCC is going to start allowing above. It sounds like the only danger of those kinds of things happening are on Cell phones which they said were not protected by these new rules.

I wish I was business savvy enough to start my own broadband service.

I'd use the best fiber optic cables, sustainable business, maintain net neutrality, and charge fair prices that are competitive with other broadband companies and force them to clean up their act or ship out. Or hell, maybe just charge fair prices. Chances are it's so much lower than what companies like comcast charge they'd be run out of business, and I could finally get my sweet, sweet revenge on them for being such bastards to me all these years!

Ok, so I can't do that cause I don't have a clue on business running, but I bet if someone started a company, asking for donations from the internet to start a new business following these principles, with the ultimatum that they would never go back on their promise of net neutrality, fair prices, or use of proper cables and business practices, you'd probably get enough start up money to easily accomplish it.

Only problem is, comcast and other companies would probably assrape any company that tried with shady lawsuits, and they'd probably win. :/

You wouldn't gain the necessary permissions to be allowed to build your network on the public right of way.

It's very purposefully designed to be confusing. There's regulation now in an effort to keep net neutrality in place, except they failed.

    In political terms:

Conservatives want companies the "freedom" to let companies charge whatever the hell they want and design whatever schemes they want.
Liberals want "regulation" to prevent any one entity trying to tier-off the internet.

This bill sets down regulation in an effort to keep neutral, but is so weak that these companies regulate themselves and can set their own standards.

In other words: The common guy loses. They gasp at the horror of big guvment, and are forced to pay tiered internet anyway.

The freedom of companies to do whatever the hell they want stops the moment they use an inch of public land (see: public right of way). Ideally, anyway.

Meanwhile, a real grassroots movement in America won a big battle for increased low power FM stations, after about 10yrs of work.

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of Americans actually give a shit about net neutrality, even after explaining to them what it means. Most would settle for a slight internet fee reduction in exchange for a loss of freedom.

Is anyone really surprised that the government only listens to corporations?
