I could imagine it being a center of frustration for someone who's played the game for two weeks tops... before one's need for new gear/weapons severely slows down. Everyone else is now mostly pissed about having nothing to do after those two weeks.
I'm pretty sure the main reason rolanmart got started was to sell very expensive items(avoid AH fee) and to sell non AH-able items(dynamis currency as an example). Players don't go to rolanmart to buy rank 10 gear/weapons/cheap mats for crafting. One reason it DID work is because not everyone had an extra mule to sit there 24/7 OR you had to afk there. There wasn't 300 people bazaaring in one 'market ward' sized area. I doubt there ever was 100(maybe during xi's peak population days?) people bazaaring, and since last I played I'd see 50 tops at a time. People who had junk to sell usually didn't sell it there because it cost them money(for an extra account). With free retainers it's a welcome "sell your junk here" for everyone in XIV. SE's best move would be to just hire some players to tell them what works and what doesn't or actually try to understand feedback.
SE: An incoming feedback from a player look! *Hundreds of serious japanese faces turn to the feedback monitor in the corner*
???: kladj&*^#&*&*0dhkjhskjh(*&(y9y3(*(hk JHFA(*&(*&*( KSJHA(&(*&
SE: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT!?!?! MORE RETAINERS I DON"T KNOW JUST DO IT!!
After they hire players to help them:
SE: Let's see you figure this shit out homo.
Player A: Ok let's see...
???: We want fucking content and a god damn AH!
SE: OH! The motherfuckers want content, not more bullshit.
Player A: Yep it looks like they want content and an auction house.
SE: Well Christ on a fucking bike we had no idea!
Disclaimer (I actually kind of enjoy FF14, it could be ALOT better)
Not trying to defend them here on the AH as I would like an AH myself, but is it possible that they are going to add it to Ishgard? I remember that AH was kind of useless in Windy/Bastok/San'Doria. Perhaps that's why they don't want to invest any time into turning this thing into a full blown AH.
AH wasn't useless in starter towns until really level 20-25 when you got to Jeuno and the better gear was, because there was more people. The way that 14 is now, there isn't a central hub for people to gather at, perhaps Ishgard will be that place, but even still, why not add the AH to where people are at now? Then later, once Ishgard opens up, link them all. It'd be sorta pointless to just have an AH in one city and leave the wards in other cities, should be in all of them and just limited like 11 was, were certain rank gear isn't available at the lower cities.
so the consensus is that we are not getting an AH in Ishgard?
not black and white..
the market ward system does suck less, but it still sucks within the fail range, thats all I'm saying.
its going to take a lot more than a search function to push market wards past the fail border, for certain.
edit:and if you want me to elaborate on what i mean by fail, i'm referring to how it will eventually break down to a point where people will not use it at all. the fact that its only borderline functional due to the existence of external sites like YG to aid its market process is testament to this.
What you guys seem to forget is that this was probably the last update left over from the old team. The new guys didn't really have time to change much and it simply shows that a change was needed if they want to fix the game in time. Hopefully we'll know what this new direction is soon enough.
Also have to consider how much work was done on stuff planned for first '11 update, if any.
Here's to hoping that now many of the technical issues are worked out that more work will be put into content.
Thanks, Sruon.
Just bought a few items out of the warns. It's kinda painless, but still really silly running around and all that. Found what I needed though so I guess I can't complain. Would still rather have an AH but this will do for now.
