For entry-level guitars in the US, electric and acoustic, there's not really any better provider than Rondo. http://www.rondomusic.com/acoustics.html They haven't got a physical store presence to keep the costs down, but their quality control is second to none and there's full refund within the US and Canada. They have a fairly fanatical following with stateside guitar geek types.

Thanks for the advice. After much more researching and much youtubing I went with a nylon starter kit from Rondo. I'm a huge classical music faggot so I'll be getting plenty more out of it than my passing interest in percussive stuff on a steel string. I'm sure nylon won't prevent me from doing a bit of tapping.
