    True Grit

Just got back from seeing this and enjoying some om nom Chinese food, fucking great movie. Coen brother's made this their own imo, setting it apart from the John Wayne version in so many ways.

This may be Bridges's best role since The Dude.

Saw it the other day. I would be surprised if this did not get a bunch of Oscar nominations.

The girl who plays Mattie Ross is absolutely amazing. She won the role through an open casting call too.

Jeff Bridges does an excellent John Wayne, but yet adds his own flare to the role of Rooster Cogburn.

I just hope they don't continue and redo Rooster Cogburn as well, because it's not a very good movie. I think the Coen brothers are just sticking with the novel however.

Well considering I don't think they've ever made a sequel things should be okay lol. Also Coen brothers's next project is an adaptation of The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon, which should be fucking awesome (if you haven't read the book, imagine A Serious Man + great detective noir). The novel's backstory is too hard to explain but its an alternate history of the US and is a detective story set in a settlement for Jews created during WWII in Alaska.

Also, gonna call it getting nominated for Best Cinematography and losing to Inception or some other movie as that's what happens to their director of Photography every year apparently.
He's been nominated 8 times, some years being 2 of the nominees for 2 of his movies and still has yet to win. That has to be some of the worst bad luck EVER.

    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005683/
No Country for Old Men and Assassination of Jesse James by Coward Robert Ford losing to There Will be Blood standing as probably the worst luck out of the bunch imo.

I'm hesitant to see this because I am afraid that the remake leaves out a detail from the original that I thought was so badass.

    Spoiler: show
In the final showdown, Rooster is facing the bad guys across a field. Bad guy insults him and Rooster yells "Fill your hands, you son of a bitch!" The badass part was him charging with the horse reins in his teeth, pistol in one hand and a rifle in the other. I got a kick out of Rooster reloading the rifle by twirling it in his hand. Please tell me they kept the final showdown intact.

    To the above

    Spoiler: show
Yeah the scene is still there but it's slightly different. The line is the same and he uses his teeth to steer the horse but he has 2 pistols instead of a pistol and a rifle.

Overall the movie was great, I loved it.

    About your question
    Spoiler: show
The fight is in the movie, I know the rifle flip you're talking about, it's not exactly in this version, but Rooster still has reins in his teeth, still 4 on 1. If anything I think the fight was done more realistically/believably and less in the stereotypical John Wayne western style that its done in the original. (That's just a result of better cameras, camera lenses, and sound editing though.) There's a good 200-300 yards between Ned Pepper's gang and Rooster this time, and La Boeuf and Mattie are high above them, so its believable when none of them can hit the broad side of a barn unlike the original where the shootout is taking place w/ all of them 20 yards from one another and none of em can hit for shit.

I too, nom'd on some chinese(p.f. chang's) and watched this last night. Great, great movie. The banter between characters and the dude's character in this was awesome. Definitely a must see.

    Spoiler: show
the indian dude near the beginning was hilarious "before i am hanged, i would like to say-muffled). That song that started off the ending credits was just terrible though.

The racism in this one versus the original was fucking brilliantly done for comedic effect, the part where Cogburn keeps kicking the indian kids off the trading posts's horse post was absolutely hilarious.

Just saw it, having never seen the original, I liked it a lot. The girl was amazing, I hope she doesn't get stuck in a bunch of shitty roles from now on.

Was better than I expected it to be, lots of good funny. I didn't like the ending at all, though.

    ending spoiler kinda

    Spoiler: show
I definitely thought it should have just ended with him getting her to the hut and the guy opening up the door and looking out.

This ending is better than the originals by a longshot.
    Original movie's ending spoilers
    Spoiler: show
In that, you finally meet her lawyer whom shes been talking about all book (kind of sad he wasn't in this b/c they had J.K. Simmons voicing him in the letter to Mattie w/ the horse traders contract, a scene which the original did alot better imo), and whose existence La Boeuf, Cogburn, and everybody else bicker about a good deal of the movie. The lawyer pays Rooster the rest of what he is owed, and then complains that Mattie doesn't realize how sick she really is (she doesn't lose the arm, but is just sick for a few months based on the change in weather). Rooster then makes some crazy bet w/ the lawyer that Mattie will live and book ends with Rooster escorting her home where she offers him a spot to be buried in when he dies in a really contrived and awful conversation.

The loss of her arm, the nod to Jesse James and her disregard towards him made the ending for me imo.

Agreed. This ending was way better. I really enjoyed this movie and the way Jeff Bridges portrayed Cogburn. I'd definitely be surprised if this movie wasn't nominated for a few things.

I would be irritated if it was not nominated for many things. I think this year's Oscar's will be a race between 'True Grit' and 'The King's Speech' (which is also excellent).

You forgot Black Swan, The Fighter and Inception for certain things (original screenplay, cinematography, and such.).

I did. I hate the years that have no good films and some awful movie wins, then a year comes around with 5-6 really amazing films and only one can win.

Also, Social Network and possibly Toy Story 3 (theres 1-2 others i'm blanking on as well..)

In general imo, Oscar field has been pretty solid following 2006 awards (Brokeback/Crash year) with at least 3+ movies in contention and awesome. But 2008 (There Will Be Blood/No Country for Old Men) and onwards has been fucking legendary, with a huge array of movies every year.

Social Network should win best picture, but this was a very well done movie and I enjoyed it. Only thing that bothered me was

Loved it, big coen brothers fan and loved the original, and when I heard it was very faithful to it, just with some beautiful deakins cinematography and a helping hand from the brothers where the script needed it I knew it was going to be good.
