ffxiv newb question

I was wondering buying ff14 the one they sell in retail places I'm basically just buying the registration code right? I ask because if that's the case. Can somebody sell me a registration code I really wanna play it but Id rather not pay $60 for a game that I'd eventually have to pay monthly. I played ffxi so I'm not new at all it's just that I other than ffxi I don't really buy pc games. The other reason I'm asking is because I believe I can just easily torrent the game aslong as I can find a registration code right?

Another thing is I see it used in amazon wouldn't that mean the registration code has already been used so it would be pretty stupid to buy it used?

PS, Any time you buy a game, you are only buying a registration code.
