    Board Games!

Just figured I'd post and see how the BG community feels about board games, and what your favorites are!

    Some of mine...

    Munchkin
    Zombie Dice
    Settlers of Catan
    TransAmerica
    Power Grid
    Carcasonne
    Thurn and Taxis

So tell me BG, what's your game? Feel free to discuss and post recommendations too.

Big lover of Munckin here, assuming all the add-ons are there, otherwise you start getting repeat cards too quickly with 4-man games. Takes forever to teach everyone the rules though, especially for the ones that could go either-way if it's not either described in the rule-set, the website, or the 'owner of the cards has last say'.

Catan.....I love the gameplay, but fuck setting the board up, takes forever when you have the expansions. Much better suited for a digital format, or on a $15k table.

Will throw in the FLUX card game for good measure. Fast and fun with a group of friends.

Apples to Apples used to be fun, but once you played enough matches to know what all the 'instant win' cards are, it kinda loses its charm.

I also enjoy Puerto Rico. Game takes a few rounds to learn the ins & outs though, not exactly pickup&play. It's all about indirectly cockblocking your opposition with regards to obtaining worthwhile mats, and controlling the boats for sale of your goods.

If anyone wants to be nostalgic...

Hero Quest, that's all that I played when I was younger. Too many intense games and it got to the point where my friends and I made our own quests because we ran out. lol

Puerto Rico is pretty good, yeah. I love Catan despite the setup, it helps to have two or three people who know how to play so you can get setup done fast...the game is such that I rarely want to play more than once in a sitting though so even the setup time isn't a big deal since you don't have to do it again for another round. Microsoft Surface is pretty cool for it though, saw it at PAX. I'd certainly consider dropping cash on one if you could get enough games into it.

Apples to Apples is a great party game in terms of just getting people to have fun together but I generally dislike it for its lack of direction. I've always had fun with it when I've had to resort to playing it, and so I certainly don't mind playing it if we must...but it's a far cry from something I would ever actually pick out to play.

I can't get into Fluxx. It's too chaotic and lacks a core framework to keep the players on tack. I suppose it'd work okay for party games like Apples to Apples, but if I want something fast and fun and lightweight, I have Zombie Dice :D

Edit: Man, Tonko...I never seem to find people IRL that know Arkham Horror that I can learn it from. I don't like just buying a game outright without trying it first, and Arkham Horror looks pretty complicated to try to read through on your own (especially without being able to "playtest" it). I'm hoping I can get lucky at PAX East

Munchkin is my favorite card game for sure.

As for board games, Diplomacy trumps 'em all for me. It's also a great way to lose friends!

I would have said "parlor games" or "tabletop games" but both of those tend to narrow the genre too far for my liking. Balderdash is perfectly acceptable (though I'm more partial to playing Dictionary, which is most fun when you have highly cerebral people playing because they come up with the craziest shit, bonus points for people with English degrees); you can say TicTacToe for all I care, I'm not discriminating

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

been a long time since I've played any board games, two I remember liking a lot though was a game called Can't Stop and errr Toss the Pigs? (think that was the name).

Oh man, while technically a card game we used to play the fuck out of one called Lunch Money. I miss that game D:

Risk. I used to hate the game when I was younger just because it confused me. Once someone taught me how to play I got incredibly hooked on it and would mix it in on D&D/Magic the Gathering nights when I was in high school.

Arkham is very complicated, and comes with a pretty steep learning curve. If you ever get to Austin, I'll teach ya I love the game.

Shadows over Camelotis pretty awesome, Arkham Horror is super fun, but it has by far the worst learning curve ever lol, I think i've played it like 10 times now and still don't know wtf is happening half the time, Ticket to ride is really fun and strategic, Puerto Rico is awesome always, I played Chronos once and thought it was pretty fun.

Carcassan and Settlers are fun but can't do more than one of them a month lol, Mystery at the Abbey is like Clue but on crack, Order of the stick is the most rage inducing game ever for how long it can take, followed closely by Kill Doctor Lucky, especially with the little dog expansion.

Anyone tried the new civ boardgame? I saw they re-released it in conjunction with civ5 and was curious if it was worth a look. I used to play settlers with my roomies quite a bit, but trying to get drunk people to set up the game was a pain in the ass. I love playing risk and axis and allies personally...grew up playing risk and have been altering a board I bought last month with rules that I'm making up to make it more challenging.

I still have my box. Only a few pieces missing too. Lost the cardboard armory bit though.

I really wanna pick up Risk off the PSN, I already have Catan on it.

Also, as recently evidenced in the Tron thread between me & ZarakiKujata, Go.

I went to a board game night for new years and learned a pair of new ones; DungeonQuest and Runebound. The former is pretty fun, like a game of ravenloft with super high schadenfreude quotient; can be played in about 90 minutes. Only downside is that it's hardcapped to 4 players.

The latter game, Runebound...holy christ. Longest game EVERRRRRR. Took 5 of us 9 hours to play. NEVER AGAIN. It was well built in terms of gameplay but it just takes way too long to execute; lots of stuff requires that every player resolve some task before turn process can advance, and sometimes these tasks involve multiple groups of cards and dice, which just exacerbates the problem.
