Torchlight / Steam - Display adapter to HDTV causes mouse not to work for game

Mouse works fine everywhere else on the computer, even in the Steam application, but as soon as I launch Torchlight it won't let me click anything from the menu.

I closed out the app, disconnected the display adapter, and restarted Torchlight and everything works ok. I plugged the adapter in and the game won't go to my HD display, so I quit and restarted with the display adapter in and got the same issue. Why would this only happen in the game and nowhere else?

I am using a late 2009 Macbook, going from mini-DVI to HDMI.
