My take is this: Yeah, it's stupid to drink and drive but there's something to be said for empathy. I'm saddened by his death, but I'm much more saddened by the fact that he has family and friends left behind to grieve. Those are the people my heart goes out to. We know driving drunk is stupid, they know it's stupid, hell, surely he knew it was stupid. Yes, it was a bad decision, and it was stupid. That's a no-brainer. That doesn't mean that people can't look past that and give their hearts out to the people who loved him, who are right now shocked and devastated.
It sucks that he died this way, absolutely. 100% avoidable. And I'm sure no one knows that better than his family and friends, which surely makes it even worse for some of them. So yes, I am sad, for those people. They loved him and he is gone. That's not easy for anyone no matter how they go. So yeah, I can look at it and shake my head about how dumb it was to drive drunk, but I can still be empathetic to those left behind.
