    Morrowind

I hope it's a lot more like morrowind this time. Bring back the awesome spell system from morrowind, and shit like levitate. The dungeons/buildings were also SOOO much more interestingly designed since they knew you had the possibility to levitate. Oblivions dungeons and buildings seemed very D&D dungeon grid like to me. Morrowind also had a much more flexible quest system, with there usually being lots of different ways to "solve" a quest.

Really, levitate and the flexible spell system are the big ones for me. You could create such awesome spells in Morrowind.

Properly modded I think Morrowind is the best single player game of all time

what's so awesome about Morrowind's spells? I have it on my laptop and haven't really gotten into it yet. I was thinking of that when I started my new Oblivion character this weekend but I'm so used to Oblivion, and it's so much prettier. I really should play Morrowind though, I hear the story and the quests in general are far better and the world much bigger.

I put like 250 hours into oblivion but for whatever reason, I REALLY can't get into morrowind. I think mostly it's the interface, not having a red icon to know if you're stealing was a big turn off for me. Were there personal houses in morrowind to store all your shit?

There was a plugin that got you a motherfucking castle on it's own island with some pretty neat stuff like teleports to all major cities, mannequins, display stands, a training room with target dummies, alchemy room with boxes for different ingredients etc.

Other than that in the vanilla game I just murdered people and took the houses I liked the look of, then tried to charm NPCs and make them stand as guards outside. I also remember turning one house in Balmora into a pillow fort, good times. There may have been a legitimate way of getting houses through quests, but it's been too long D:

I've been wanting to give morrowind another go, but the thought of finding/installing it again, then modding it to a reasonable standard so I can look at it for more than 30 seconds without feeling ill kinda puts me off

ps. Not excited for TES: V because a) There's nothing yet (ie actual information/footage of game content) to be excited about, and b) it's nearly a full damn year before the expected release, not counting inevitable delays

Morrowind was absolutely the best one of the series, thus far. Heres to hoping 5 will be better :D

This. I remember a cave in Morrowind where the majority of it was almost all vertical and required the use of Levitate to get to the top and find all the hidden treasure, and you needed it to explore the wizard towers in the towns on the southeast coast of Vvardenfell.

You could have one of three different personal houses, depending on which of three factions you ended up joining.

I recommend checking out http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/ for a HUGE list of mods that will really make the game great and look new.

that link is awesome. never was able to get into Morrowind, but looking at screenshots of the updated graphics, I think I could give it another try.

still curious why people love it so much though. even big fans of Oblivion seem to prefer Morrowind. what's so great about it?

    No oblivion gates.

But seriously, the environments were alot more varied, the majority of Oblivion is human settlements and doesn't really vary as dramatically as cities in Morrowind did, and the game felt slightly more mundane as a result (although Shivering Isles had a much more 'fantasy' feel compared to the rest of Oblivion).

Also I didn't like the dumbing down of the combat system: Morrowind had stuff like Axe, Spear, Long Blade, Short Blade, Blunt weapons, crossbows, etc and Oblivion did away with half of them, putting axes under 'blunt' and also had fewer spells (notably the lack of Jump and Levitate).

That said, I still like Oblivion, and it does have some advantages (gaining special attacks at certain combat skill levels, extinction of cliff racers, being able to cast spells without 'equipping' your special magic-casting hands first)

Also the alchemy system in Morrowind could be abused to hilarious effect

I just modded cliff racers to be less aggressive, not 0 aggresiveness, but they no longer attack from halfway across the map if you cough.

    Morrowind alchemy was pimp.

ok that makes sense. I have noticed far more interesting vegetation in Morrowind screenshots. thanks for the opinion, I might give it a try this weekend if I can mod the game without breaking it. definitely need to fix the graphics at least, that shit hurts my eyes after getting used to current-gen games. 2D ages so much better than 3D.

This has a few things about morrowind. http://www.thebigpixels.com/musings/...ollPosition=11

Specifically about the spell/enchant system though. It was SUPER flexible. You could make for a single spell that gives you swift swim, water breathing, and shoots a fire ball all at the same time if you wanted. You could do funny stuff to run away from people, like making a super low level levitate spell that gets cast on "other" instead of "self" and use it to make people move super slow. You could use water walk on somebody else so they got stuck on top of the water while you swam away under. Start combining spells with alchemy and you could do super crazy stuff. Jump over basically the whole world in a leap, heh.

You could make custom spells that did pretty much anything.

Besides all the graphical updates, there are two mods in particular that add a ton to the game for me that you should use if you decide to give it a try.

    http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.co....detail&id=258

That adds much needed life to the oceans. Instead of vast empty spaces they're really fun to explore now and full of life everywhere. It also randomly spawns different things to come across like giant underwater glass castles that you can explore and find treasure in. It really makes exploring the oceans fun.

Which brings me to the second mod, which adds a big sail boat to explore the now very interesting oceans in. Sailing around is also a really nice alternative to quick travel or hoofing it.

    http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.co...Detail&id=2734

I couldn't ever play this game again without those two mods.

Here's my person favorite "private base" mod

    http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.co....Detail&id=502

And this adds a TON of atmosphere to the game with great sounds.

    http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.co...detail&id=1463

There's also a ton of really cool clothing mods out there that add shops all around to sale much improved looking clothes. Last time I got morrowind all modded correctly to play with a few years ago, and I had so much fun going around finding cute clothes for my character I never really got around to doing anything else Wish I had some screenshots still. I had this one of my char in this awesome dress standing on a tower and out in the distantness in the waste land you can see a dragon flying around breathing fire from this mod http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.co....Detail&id=994

Best game ever (though getting it setup/modded is a pita)

*damnit, now I want to get it setup and play again ><

thanks for the links. I spent my entire evening last night modding Morrowind and I'm not even done yet, lol. some of those I've already implemented, but the Water Life one I was hesitant to add. given your glowing recommendation, I'll check it out. worst comes to worst I can just uncheck it in the Morrowind Launcher.

so far I've added nearly everything that was in the link on the previous page, as well as some extras that fix small things like making plant harvesting more like Oblivion. think I'll hold off on any mods that drastically alter the game by adding new monsters or changing the leveling system, but that's what a second character down the road is for. for the same reason, I didn't add anything like Tamriel Rebuilt yet - again, something to try down the road.

might mess around with Distant Lands (within Morrowind Graphics Extender) tonight. it was making my computer chug even on some pretty low settings, but without it the magically-appearing trees shatter any sense of immersion, especially after being used to Oblivion. anyone with tips on how to make that work more smoothly would be welcome.

anyone else with mod suggestions for Morrowind, let me know!

edit: as long as I'm on the topic, can anyone help me pare down this skill list for my character?

    Armorer
    Light Armor
    Marksman
    Sneak
    Short Blade
    Illusion
    Alchemy
    Conjuration
    Enchant
    Alteration
    Mysticism

that's 11 skills, and I know only 10 can be major/minor. not sure which one to get rid of.

could lose armorer easily, it's pretty cheap to get done plus having it as a major or minor skill is going to make you level up pretty fast. can also take off alchemy, it'll make you level up fast as well, and it's also really easy to raise, even when it's not a major/minor skill.

Here's a decent guide to a lot of mods, even though it's a little old now. http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html

trust me about the water life, it's awesome. Otherwise there's only 2 water life forms total in the whole world, and they're both ugly + aggressive

MGE I've never tried, since it seemed to break compatibility or cause problems with a lot of stuff. Also supposed to be annoying to get setup right.

*This utility probably isn't as important these days, now that computers are much faster, but I think it also lets you set wide screen resolutions which is kind of a must these days.

    http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.co...s.detail&id=22

don't think it'll work with MGE, but it also lets you set the view distance at least twice as far as you can normally. That's always been far enough for me that I didn't feel like messing with MGE

come to think of it, I have noticed that about Alchemy in Oblivion. I'll ditch Armorer and decide on something to replace Alchemy. thanks for the advice.

I really like MGE, but that's because it worked flawlessly for me (aside from the aforementioned chugging with Distant Lands on) and it makes things pretty. after reading the review of MGE on the link you provided, I think I've realized what I was doing wrong with Distant Lands too. sucks that you had problems with it though.

so I've been setting this up, and so far I've run into a small problem in one of the shops in teh starting town. IT says something along the lines of "cannot load cuirass_a texture" when I try to enter the store, then I go upstairs and someone sitting behind a desk has a HUGE yellow diamond with an exclamation point surrounding them. Do I just need to download a texture pack and hope it replaces whatever is missing?
