I can get it to run but its just shapes, anyone know anything else for me to try?

Wine doesn't guarantee programs to run 100% on Linux.
It can load the exe, but it won't load everything.

Don't bother, spent hours fiddling with it back in the day when I played XI. You're better off just dual-booting.

you might be best trying the wine section for ffxi and posting there. a year or so ago i had ffxi working fine in wine, just needed the tweaks from the wine website.

the Wine site??? good point. i had it working fine but gave up on it cuz of windower. I wanna just use ubuntu, i'm so fn tired of windows...

The problem you're seeing there is incomplete DirectX support by wine. If you want to see a list of all of their todos for dx compatibility, look at their web page.
As far as a solution, everyone else pretty much has it right. If you want to use Ubuntu, then dual boot and just use Windows for FFXI. Call me cynical, but this is a challenge that I don't know most people are up to. You've got to have a pretty strong incentive to go through the extra steps when you've got a perfectly (subjectively) functional system sitting right there in front of you. Speaking from experience that you'll have to take my word on, it's worth the effort to learn, but it's usually easiest if you can find a second computer at a thrift store or something that you can put linux on, so that your experiments don't interfere with other things you want to do, such as playing FFXI.

Linux also lets you double post, the BG servers run Ubuntu, I have seen it with mine own eyes.

FFXI is playable on any linux distro, including ubuntu, but you will still suffer from performance issues. I don't recommend playing through virtualbox, nor do I even know if you would be able to. Wine 1.2.1 is as far as wine is concerned anymore outdated, even though its a stable version. First thing i would do is update to the most current version, http://www.winehq.org/announce/1.3.11

If you are capable of dual machines, you could dedicate a Windows box just for FFXI, and link its screen to your Linux screen via Synergy. It's how I do my 3-screen, 2-computer setup, so my web browser is on a seperate non-Windows machine from my FFXI install, reducing infection and keylogging risks.

Unless it's changed recently, I've had FFXI running in Ubuntu perfectly fine around 2 years ago. Do you happen to be on ATI/AMD graphics?
