Godzilla (May 16th, 2014)

Just got back from seeing it. Screw the naysayers, this was an awesome monster movie. It might have been a slow start but the payoff is worth it.

I loved all the fight scenes, even the cutaways and small TV ones. When Godzilla finally did Atomic Breath I was grinning like a child. Loved how he killed the female Muto

I might be the minority, but I kinda wished there were some Jaegers in this movie. It's pretty good for a monster flick, though I was hoping that Godzilla and the other Kaiju(Muto? I couldn't find the term on the wiki or anything) had a bit more screen time. It definitely focused more on the characters than the actual fighting.

I kinda want Pacific Rim 2 now.

Edit: Apparently Pacific Rim 2 might actually be a thing in the future. They're in talks.

I love how Bryan Cranston got all the screen time in the trailers, and it doesn't show that kid from kick-ass hardly at all, but in the actual movies Bryan Cranston dies at the fucking beginning of the movie.

Best parts:
-Everything after the halo jump was spectacular and was the best part of the movie.
-Godzilla's roar practically shook the whole theater and put chills down my spine.

The first use the the blue breath, and when he destroys the final MUTO with the blue breath down his throat. What an amazing moment.

As much as I didn't care for the 3D, I am very glad I saw it in IMAX. That first roar, you could feel the vibrations.

Godzilla versus the Mutos make up maybe 20 minutes of the entire movie. The majority of it being a fucking cocktease, whenever they met up to battle they would cut away from the scene immediately. Only at the very end you get a bad ass battle between the monsters. The rest is two hours of ridiculously shitty acting consisting of humans no one gives a fuck about. They kill off Cranston way too early. Lieutenant Brody is apparently the only EOD tech in the history of the military with the most bland personality ever. The wife could've been deleted from the movie and no one would've noticed. I especially felt bad for Ken Watanabe whose sole purpose in the movie was to constantly remind you Godzilla was a good guy.

I don't see how anyone can religiously bash Bay for the Transformer movies yet praise this garbage when it follows the exact same formula to a T.

Saw this with my husband yesterday, I think we'll probably go back with the kids tomorrow morning and see it in 3D (no IMAX nearby sadly T.T). I was almost completely satisfied, though a few bits did have me scratching my head, mainly about the military responses to things...

The kid's tank in Japan labeled "Mothra" made me LOL. Could be a teaser, or just a nod to the past. I don't see any screenshots of it yet, but I saw it when they went back to the apartment to get the ZIP discs, when the son picked up the GI Joe toy.

The nuke at the end, could that be what revived Godzilla? Could he have absorbed the radiation from it, healing himself and leaving the bay area radiation free? I too thought it odd nobody was worried about the nuke going off so close to shore, but then I remembered the Muto gestating at the plant in Japan and soaking up all the radiation from the breach. I dunno, it just seems like a way to kill two plot holes with one stone.

Gotta wait till Monday to see it but I think we're taking the trip to the Imax to see it. Hope it's worth seeing it in 3D over 2d for the sound and screen.

I saw it today and enjoyed it a lot. The theater was split with about half people raised on Toho films and other half were teens who maybe watched a youtube clip of classic Godzilla thought it looked stupid and shut if off.

I would of been a lot happier if the son had died and Cranston was in it for the whole film, very wasted potential there. I do agree should of gotten rid of the wife, was wasted ink on a script.
I can see how people be raging over the people to monster ratio but I think that the teasing build ups worked well enough and the actual delivery didn't fail. Most of the old Toho films were filled with horrible acting and gaping plot holes but was all for the sake of delivering epic monster fights, so from that perspective it fits fine within the linage of Godzilla films.

Yeah even the older movies had human shits that seemed to drag on. Hell even the 90's Gamera movies did too.

That's coming from a person who absolutely loves mecha & kaijuu(Del Toro) man. Two completely different director views but I do agree it is a little weird.

I just remember watching a Garret interview and he mentioned "I want you to feel sad during this movie" or some shit. I'm sure most are sad that Godzilla wasn't even the man focal point of his movie. I do think they got the feel of Godzilla in design and destruction right this time.
