SAN FRANCISCO — The Bears held more contempt than respect for the 49ers Monday night.

With less than a week to prepare for their wild-card playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday at Soldier Field, the Bears were reeling from their 52-14 loss at Candlestick Park.

``I`ll live to avenge this game-as a player, as a coach, whatever,`` said Bears quarterback Jim Harbaugh, who managed to complete 17 of 24 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown. ``I plan to get revenge somehow.``



The 52 points allowed were second to the club`s all-time record 53 points given up to the Chicago Cardinals in 1955.

``They shut down our running game (95 yards, 48 by Harbaugh),`` said Harbaugh. ``The (Tom) Waddle fumble (at the 49ers` 2 in the first quarter)

didn`t deflate us, but who`s to say what would have happened had we scored then?

``For some reason, we just don`t match up well in certain areas against the 49ers.

``I thought that we`d get back in the game, but we failed to make it on that fourth-and-1 play (in the third quarter). That hurt us badly.

``In the second half, we expected to be able to throw quick passes, but turnovers killed us.``

Bears players felt the 49ers rolled up the score late in the game.

``I`ve always respected the 49ers and particularly (offensive coordinator) coach (Mike) Holmgren. But scoring at the end was in poor taste, and I said something to them about it,`` said Bears backup quarterback Peter Tom Willis, who tossed an interception and a TD pass in his fourth-quarter stint in relief of Harbaugh.

``They totally embarrassed us,`` said running back Neal Anderson. ``They beat us every way possible.``

``The 49ers have got an excellent scheme. They played excellent football tonight,`` said defensive end Trace Armstrong. ``It`s embarrassing. It sticks in your throat. I didn`t think anyone could do this to us.``

``No one is going to forget this game. We didn`t play Bear football,``

said veteran strong safety Shaun Gayle, who is headed to the Pro Bowl as an alternate.

``When something like this happens, there`s a tremendous amount of evaluation, trying to find out where people`s hearts are. We`ve got to pull it together in the next few days.``

The Bears defense had been ranked third in the NFC entering Monday`s game.

``I can`t even begin to tell you how I feel after this game,`` said linebacker Mike Singletary. ``The times we have been out here, we haven`t played well. Tonight we came out here trying to focus on their strength-their wideouts-but somehow, they did well in spite of it.

``The 49ers wanted to show the country that they belong in the playoffs, and they did that.``

- Singletary may have played his final regular-season game with the Bears Monday night, but he`s not saying for sure. A nine-time Pro bowler, he says he will retire when he knows he has reached the top of his profession.

``Making the Pro Bowl certainly helps. But at the same time, I have some pretty creditable sources-teammates and coaches-to let me know where I am and what I am doing. So that is what is important.``
