there is no proof that he has ever even seen the "vitriolic hate speech" much less that the shooting was in any way incited by it. in your hypocrisy you are using the tragedy to espouse your own opinion, in a ridiculous fashion, whilst criticizing others for doing the selfsame thing. Get off your fucking high horse, and shut the fuck up, olo.
the only thing wrong with coming to the conclusion that this guy's actions were at least in part fueled by the decisively violent tone of political discourse today would be to assume this is solely the fault of the right wing. they're better at it and they do it more, but they're not the only ones who contribute to the problem.
and unless I'm missing something, I don't see how the claim that he "might not have seen it" is anything but horribly laughable. that shit is everywhere. it's on every news channel, it's in every political commerical. you can't be alive and aware in the United States today without running into that shit.
Since when does lack of definitive evidence alter probability?
Just because it can't be (currently) proven that the very clear rhetoric in question in any way sparked his actions, doesn't mean any alternative is on equal footing.
I think we'd be better off looking at it not as a question of "did Sarah Palin's gun chart of the US inspire him to shoot this person?" and more as "was this incident an inevitability given the current tone of political rhetoric in the United States?"
the answer becomes a lot more clear that way.
You don't see the problem here? People want to blame the "vitriolic hate speech" which again I do not in any way condone or defend, despite there being no evidence to support it being the cause. When it was weed that was even suggested as being a contributing factor everyone immediately jumped on how ludicrous it was and there was no evidence and so on and so forth, but the moment something people don't approve of is suggested as "inciting the massacre" it is just flatly accepted as the cause? It's twofaced bullshit. Could either one have contributed? Yes. Obviously the speech is far more likely to have an effect, but again, there is no evidence. Unless there is any evidence that his actions were based on or resulting from something then blaming either is just as likely. Hell, I could say he opened fire because the stoplights by my house are too short. Without some sort of link, even a tenuous one, any attempt to label something as the cause is invalid and unjustified and only an attempt to advance your own political ideals and opinions. Obviously the examples I have used are exaggerated to make my point, and while I certainly agree that things like the target list etc are irresponsible and dangerous at best, it is just as disgusting and invalid to blame this tragedy on them before there is any actual evidence of a causal link. To offer an admittedly imperfect metaphor, it's like hanging a man because he had a possible motive.
Edit: Again, I am not in any way condoning it, and it is certainly between possible and likely that it played a role, but people like olo treating it as fact, and as a foregone conclusion, are no better than the politicians they criticize for doing the same.
there will never be evidence to prove that he was fueled by the hate speech that is being passed around so freely these days, unless he happens to have sarah palin's website bookmarked on his computer. but of all the logical leaps to make, the idea that the political tone right now had something to do with his actions is by far the smallest, and it is definitely not in the same league as blaming your traffic lights. I don't know why that is so hard for you to grasp.
I'm not treating it as fact either - I'm treating it like the contributing factor that it is rather than completely discounting it like you are. When you have online merchants that cater to conservatives selling shit like this:

As for this particular case, after reading this I'm inclined to say it's a MUCH smaller factor than originally thought: http://motherjones.com/politics/2011...-phone-message

Ok after reading that article it's possible he's just a fucking psycho, and that politics had little to do with it, he became fixated on this semantics and grammar angle of nihilism and she became his focus point because, well, she was the nearby prominent figure who rebuked his worldview.
But remember kids...he's not dead.
He's in custody. We actually have a chance to get some answers from the horse's mouth instead of speculation. Just give it time.
ok he does sound like a complete lunatic, I will admit that. "what is government without words?" would actually be a good question for a masters level thesis in public policy and linguistics though.
