Ok, left field post there, but Sarah is not the only person that implies violence in her statements. Michelle makes plenty of her own which makes her statement a lil funny beyond the "my tears are flowing."

“I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us ‘having a revolution every now and then is a good thing,’ and the people – we the people – are going to have to fight back hard if we’re not going to lose our country. And I think this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom forever in the United States.”

The fuck is this drivel? Feeling sad won't cure their gunshot wounds, that's beyond obvious but that doesn't mean you can't feel bad, showing some compassion is a horrible horrible thing I guess. You can find the source while still feeling bad for the families, praying for them if you are religious, and if you arn't religious showing support for finding the cause of what happened.

Although it does never cease to amaze me how fast any topic with any resemblance to anything political/religious becomes a huge flame war and rant fest within 3 pages.

It drives me nuts when people like her use that quote too, considering Jefferson more often warned against revolution and considered the US revolution highly atypical.

did you not even read the post I was replying to? his whole stance is "hey guys stop talking about this, we should just focus on the fact that people were shot and pray for them" and "stop jumping to conclusions that a two year old could make but I'm still denying" aka who cares about accountability or anything else. I and the others immediately went to the latter of what you are talking about (finding cause), and a few come in here saying we should all just stop talking and pray for them or whatever. reading posts in a vacuum does wonders for reading comprehension, who needs context.

and this is much more than something "with any resemblance to anything political..." its entirely political in motivation. these people were shot because of their involvement in politics.

Disregarding the fact that you misunderstood that completely, here's the thing:

Even the way you took it is not some terrible evil thing. It's not like people are sitting around going "Man I hope some crazy Tea Partier goes out and kills someone."

It's a matter of people seeing something like this happen, and going "Well, hopefully the people promoting this violent rhetoric and using incredibly inappropriate imagery will be the ones really responsible for this act, and perhaps actually take responsibility for it and clean up their incredibly dangerous shit."

What proof is there that this was by a tea party member? From the youtube videos and what I've heard (which seems to be consistent, but unreliable from people who "knew" him in highschool), he seems largely like an antigovernment pothead more than a rightwing nutjob. I doubt he saw a picture from Sarah Palin and though that was a great idea to act on.

You're right. Violent political rhetoric and violent political actions are two totally separate things.

Damn you, inability to prove causality!

I'm not sure it even matters that he was a tea partier, if politicians use enough violent imagery coupled with emotional rhetoric (remember where you were on 9/11?) it becomes normalized and the application of violence becomes even more legitimate in someone's mind, especially a nutjob. You can change the culture of politics through rhetoric and this can bring out the nutjobs. The point is this is NOT the kind of dialogue we want and Palin's tactics are disgusting regardless of whether or not you can "prove" that violent imagery can directly cause a single violent action (you probably can't).

How does that make it ok to turn a thread about 19 injured people with some amount dead into a political thread bashing Sarah Palin where there is zero proof that she had anything to do with it(especially this early into the story)?

Nothing to do with it? Have you been paying attention to not just Palin, but the tactics and rhetoric of the entire Republican Party and its surrogates in general for the PAST THREE YEARS???

And Violent video games caused every school shooting in the LAST ELEVEN YEARS, right? People are going to find any connection they can to justify bashing people/things, regardless of the proof that is there for it, epically within EIGHT HOURS of the shootings.

Sounds like a currency nut who thinks fiat will enslave us all. Sounds more like a libertarian or a anarcho-capitalist than anything else.

Make the connection between any of these statements and the shooter, which would justify linking the two topics. I'm not saying there's not violent rhetoric out there.

You can't make a direct physical connection, nor would you necessarily expect to. It's possible that whatever happened and whatever connections were made was all in his head, we may never know. But violent rhetoric and emotional language CAN normalize such behaviors so it is preferable to avoid it, I mean do you really want a culture where we demonize our political opponents and casually use violent imagery as a means of settling disputes over things like health care? I feel like this should be a common sense thing.

edit: I mean to say that it's already justifiable to link the topics, it was linked previously when people were vandalizing offices during the elections. And if this type of politics becomes the norm, then actual acts of violence would be predicted to increase. I mean, you're asking for a physical link between a physical action and a mental/psychological phenomenon. Obviously it's complicated, and the dude is obviously crazy, but I think you're asking the impossible?

and the same type of tactics were being used on the opposite side of the aisle for the years Bush was in power. it's called politics, deal with it.

from everything we're seeing, this guy was just batshit crazy, plain and simple. we're all going to find out a whole lot about him in the next few days. quit blaming the wrong people.

...two forms of government ID, with a police officer there, four or five buddies taking notes....

You know why you can't yell fire in a crowded theater, right?

Why, yes, I certainly do remember when Rachel Maddow, Steven Colbert, and Harry Reid called for US citizens to take up "second amendment remedies" against George W. Bush...oh wait.
