    WD Essential acting up.

My 1 TB external hard drive has been acting up lately and I want to figure out my best options. I was getting ready to buy a new one anyway since it's full but I don't want to lose all my stuff.

I can still open up the files and access the information but some videos will freeze when being played and when I try to transfer them to my computer the process will freeze up too.

I was wondering if I can pull the hard drive out of it and put it into another enclosure, or maybe stick it into an open bay on my PC? Or is there someway to fix it?

Really depends if WD made their Essential series HDDs like the Passports. The passports have their USB/SATA controller all embedded into one board so you can't connect it to a SATA connector or dock. In the future, safer off buying an internal and putting it inside of an enclosure. Internals tend to have a longer MFG Warranty and you know what kind of HDD you're getting from the box where as purchased externals, you could be getting the lowest of the company's brand.

Also, backup whatever you have on that drive to the new drive you're getting first thing.

It's possible that some of the files got corrupted, and that's why they won't play or transfer. Try moving all the data that you aren't having trouble with, unless it's freezing no matter what you move off of it
