Bump. So basically I broke my earbuds (whoops, RIP) and realized i had no headphones for my bus trip to NYC today.
In a clutch, I picked these up:

    http://www.amazon.com/KOSS-DJ100-Pro.../dp/B003X1BEKI

They sound pretty great actually. I suppose as they get broken in they'll sound better and better.
    How'd I do?

honestly, not bad at all. personally I wouldn't have chosen koss, but that's based on brand loyalty and not any logical thought process lol

from what I'm reading about the specs and from reviews (I've never tried them personally) it sounds like they're very non-fatiguing, which will be a big benefit during extended listening sessions, like your bus ride or music at work. for that reason alone you made a good choice. apparently there are mixed results with the bass (some say it's punchy, some say it's a bit recessed) and with an amp, but consensus is definitely that they benefit from burning in. they look like a good pair of lower-midrange cans, i.e. that price range.

is this your first pair of higher-end headphones? I can't remember from earlier in the thread and too lazy to read back. if they are, they could be a decent introduction to greater sound quality. good pick, happy listening (hopefully no one busts in here with a horror story I didn't notice)

Yeah, they're my first set. They're pretty nice but not as loud as I expected tbh, that's the only setback (sometimes I just wanna listen to my ignorant hip-hop really loudly okay?) Bass is nice but depends on what I have my iPod EQ set at. I'd really like to try these out with my record player, but my vinyl is packed til June so that'll have to wait.

How do I burn them in? Just use them a lot?

just normal use over time will do it. some people suggest break-in regimens, like specifically working the headphones down into lower frequency ranges gradually to improve balance and speed up the process. in my honest opinion, that sort of thing is superstition and not worth bothering with, especially with a sub-$100 pair of cans. after 50-100 hours of normal everyday use, you'll notice a difference. it sounds like a long period of time but it'll breeze by in a few weeks.

Perfect time for this to be bumped and possibly for those phones not being loud enough, someone mentioned some fairly cheap & popular headphone amps from ebay, but I thought I remembered Demo saying that they're really easy to build on your own. Something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...253D&viewitem= - poster said they usually always go for $50. Reviews found in the listing as well. Is that worthwhile or better to attempt your own?

Also that specific seller doesn't have any available atm.

the cheap amp DIY kits reek of a product that's just trying to pander to wannabe gearheads who want to solder something. if you want an inexpensive amp, your best bet really is to just buy one. there are lots of fantastic ones for under $50

If you know your shit, building one is no sweat, and more often than not your work IS better quality. It just won't be packaged as tightly, unless you REALLY know your shit. Avoid diy kits, buy individual parts. Don't go more than 30 on a prebuilt one if you want one.
