Laptops in the Classroom?

You probably have a Student Assistance of some sort you can go to. The Disability Center at the UofA is able to get you computer privileges if you can prove in any way that your hand written notes are ineffective.

I don't know how strict over Student Disability Centers are though in terms of what they consider a Disability, since the one here is basically able to help with any problems that aren't just medical disabilities.

Hmm, do you realize the distractions that a laptop brings? Like the above said, people around you and yourself can become distracted by your laptop. This can directly effect the teacher if you guys get poor grades. All the teachers on my campus are chill though, only classes that don't allow laptops (per teacher, not a per class thing) are classes where there's no point in using one anyways.

Im glued to a PC near all day for work and fun reasons, but if I were a teacher I would forbid laptops too.

I had a doctor's note and everything but she wouldn't change her mind, so I had to go to the Dean of the entire University and get him to let me back into the class.

I had a doctor's note and everything but she wouldn't change her mind, so I had to go to the Dean of the entire University and get him to let me back into the class.

This happened me to last semester, except she didn't drop me from the class, and actually, I ended up getting HELD in the class until the day after the last day to drop and now have a 0.0 on my GPA. First grade ever under a 3.5..

UofM is a bigger school, keep in mind. Chances are good the majority of your classes will be a lecture hall type class. Which, by the way, are always better for me. I never understood this 'personalized' class crap. Personalized classes = required attendance and a ton of homework. While I could see why this would be important for major type classes, I don't think I need a 'small personal class' for journalism 101 or public speaking 101.

UofM is a terrible place because of their terrible football team. Please don't speak the name of this school ever again for any reason ever.

Edit: Laptops are allowed pretty much in every class at the University of Akron. I never knew they were even an issue and I never would have even guessed that they could be distracting for others. I'm surprised that so many people do find them distracting.

no, but when screens change and flash and shit its hard as hell NOT to look. even this girl with a macbook caused this when they bring up that dashboard screen with the little mac apps, makes my eyes shift even for a second, and now im lost in the lecture for a little bit

No laptops allowed is a pure bullshit rule. Nevermind that anyone with a brian types faster than they write these days.... since when is distraction an issue? Every professor I had in college had a couldn't-give-a-fuck attitude and rightly so. If you're paying the absurd college tuition fees and choose to waste them, that's your own problem and should be motivation enough to focus on the class.

yea, the attitude of my teachers here are "We have your money, do what you want. This course is available next semester if needed". Lol, sitting in a class now, teacher said "Only days you're required to show up are on test days. I recommend you come but it's up to you"

A lot of the kids simply didn't care about them and made it annoying to be around them. I would have happily given up my ability to type my notes in exchange for them not being able to use a computer too. It might have made it worse though that they had the ability to get rid of Attendance, then chose not to and bitched about it for the entire year.

I'm confused, you had attendance checks in a 400-500 class? How does that even work? Also, it's not hard to just stay away from the back of the class and sit up front with the rest of the nerds. Or hell, just ignore them. Maybe it was different where you went, but even the don't-give-a-fuck professors would flip a shit if someone was openly disruptive during class.

In any case, I still don't see how the disadvantages of allowing computers in class outweigh the advantages.
