If the teacher says no, then don't do it. It's disrespectful to them as well as to other students. Eventually you'll find a professor that doesn't like how you act and just drops you from his class no questions because of it, or just write off an F for you and call it a day. You can also learn to use a notebook from which you retain information better and to top it off just as usual you don't need textbooks for classes unless you're pulling hw out of em.
I already found one of those professors. He failed 60% of the class, and most of them changed their majors because of it. His tests were on stuff that he didn't teach, stuff he specifically said wasn't on the test, and stuff that requires a mathematical background most of us didn't have yet. Shining example for the character of teachers who try to pull that shit.

Retain information better? Maybe if you don't know how to use a computer. If the course requires me to draw shit like mosfets and current mirrors and etc constantly then I'm using a notebook, but if I'm in some crappy bullshit class or a CompSci class I'm using my laptop. And then still in the prior situation, sometimes I use my laptop in combination with my notebook to get shit done. And then if we get into tablets, which some of my friends/classmates have- there's NOTHING you can possibly say against laptop use in class.
