I think this is a pretty standard difference between men and women. Men, or at least in my experience most men, tend to want to "imbue" the child with good traits portrayed by other who bear that name. For example, I really want Theodore as a middle name, simply because, well he was probably one of the most badass presidents of all time(no, andrew jackson was insane, not badass, there is a difference). This continues with names from family or other famous figures that I believe have great legacies, or other admirable traits that I would like to see in a child. The wife wants something newer and prettier, not that there is anything wrong with that, but there is a blurry line somewhere between donovan and kipper, that could ruin a childs life forever.

Chase, Ian, Aiden, Charlie etc are all nice names, but if you can see a bearded hipster in a too-tight plaid shirt coveting the name, run away...

Second-, third-, and fourth-ing classical / familial names. As mentioned, the "new hotness" in naming usually ends up with stupid crops of Aidens and Madisons, and fuck those kids. Fuck. Them. More importantly, fuck their parents. Do a little bit of research into your family's genealogy, there are incredible names tucked in there, I guarantee it. I quite like my name, it's taken from four generations back, its unique enough that I've never met someone else with the name, but isn't so unique that it's an ear-sore, or cause for teasing.

and for the love of god stay away from naming them after a month of the year. my brother's wife named their litle girl Oktober Star, altho its not as bad as some names i still hate it. but my suggestions on boys names include: Curtis, James, Victor, Jace, Pietro, and Konner are all fine names i suppose.

Actually, I've seen the exact opposite; 100+ years ago it was very common to name your daughter a virtue (Prudence, Grace, etc.); male names are usually chosen to carry on family names.

its because of different valued virtues. Prudence and grace may be all well and good for women, but if men did it every other child would be a Virility or a Hung.

Btw, I realize that this thread can only end in win. Hopefully it will be good for a few chuckles while I bang my head against a wall trying to come up with names.
Can't go wrong with biblical names if that's your background, like my father's side of the family has a lot of religious names, John, Edward, Thomas, Patrick, Peter, Matthew, James, Paul. I've always liked the name Michael though, but then again you run the risk of being 1 of x Mikes in a class.

Interestingly, I've only met one person my life that has the same name as you, and that was back in grade school.

I named my kid Jiro because it rhymes with hero. And because his mother is Japanese, had a great uncle or something with the name.

I'd go with names from your favorite literature, but to each his own. For a boy, make a list of finalist names, then go through them and think of any cruel second-grade rhymes/puns that can be made. Cross those names off. Stay the fuck away from the Gen-Z soap-opera "-en/-an" shit, too.

Don't pick a first name that ends with the same letter that begins your last name.

    +1 to Isla as usual.
Back in the day names actually meant something; families would look back in to their roots and select a strong name that had a good meaning behind it.

My name is both german and irish, of which I both have heritage from, a religious meaning, as well as a strong norse background.
