The name on the birth certificate for my second oldest sister is "Infant Female", so we jokingly call her "Fee-mah-ly" instead of Sam.

We like Charles because it's the name of both my grandparents, though my wife only actually likes Charlie. I like Chase, but it may be a little weird since it's my mom's maiden name, but we rarely see that side of the family anyway. James has also been tossed around and Douglas (her grandpa, my dad).

To the person that mentioned nationality of our last name, it's German (Hufnagle). Part of me thinks it doesn't even matter what we name him, since basically everyone has always called me by my last name anyways. Huff, Huffy, Hufnagle, Hufulupugus, Hoff (from there came Knight Rider and Mitch...).

My name is Noah and I refuse to believe it's as common as an earlier link stated, ranking it somewhere in the top 15 or something. I seriously don't know anyone else named Noah, nor can I recall one significant. I've seen the name on a few celebrities but never in the wild.

My dad wanted to name me Katlyn or something like that, not sure how to spell but pronounced 'Cat-lyn' This wasn't new age shit we see from bitches today either, this was some straight hippy shit because my dad was like 35 at the time and it was 1989 for reference. For example, my dad uses such phrases as 'Cool beans' and 'Far out'.

I'm glad I got Noah, but I have always wondered how I may have been different if I had gotten the name Katlyn instead.

I've got the less common variant of two possible spellings of my name - and it is a COLLOSSAL FUCKING PAIN IN THE ARSE! My brother gets it worse than me - his name's Fraser and every fucker on the planet seems determined to call him Frasier.

I don't know if the US has the same bloody fad the UK has for making your kid's name "unique" but god I've seen some fucking trainwrecks working in schools - worst was Jaimz (James if you don't speak chav), also a Jak, about a million Destinees (with a name like that, spelt that way you have two career options - one is Macdonalds - the other involves taking your clothes off) - also Angel (always anything but), various spellings of Chardonay and other tragic ones. There are a few parts of the local area where if your kid's got a normal name - they're the unusual one. We also have the initials as names thing going on pretty badly as well - so millions of CJs, TJs, CeeJay.. and some poor local kid's actually named BJ (it's bloody hard not to giggle when calling the register on that one). We've also got the Lost names coming through into schools now - came across a Sawyer recently - you can tell what was on telly about the time they were concieved quite effectively... there's like an entire generation of girls in Newcastle called Keegan. Rumour has it of a local mum who heard a lovely pretty word for her new baby girl's name - Chlamydia... I'm sceptical of this one but I've heard it from a few people and very little would surprise me these days. Oh and names with hyphens in them - tonnes of them at the moment - usually stuff like Chelsey-May, Lilly-Mai and the like.

Before I miscarried the last baby (well babies - that one turned out to be twins) - our name shortlist for boys was things like Samuel, Alexander, Daniel was under debate (I liked it, blokey didn't), Sebastian... stuff that could be shortened to nicknames if wanted - but also had a proper long name for sounding mature and sensible - and yelling in full if you were really cross with 'em!

The one that stood out was Charlie - it's phenomenally popular over here, there seems to be at least one in every class - which I think is down to the Charlie and Lola cartoon because there's also a million and one Lola/Leila/Leilah/Lyla etcs mooching around the age 3 bracket. My big NO FUCKING WAY name is Thomas - I have numerous grey hairs induced by teaching kids named Thomas - one fed my electric pencil sharpener paperclips, another one regularly smashed up the classroom... just had horrific experiences with that name - most people who work with kids have certain names that have been scarred for life by kids with a particular name though.

The popular baby name lists just list all names I think without separating first or second (or third etc.) names. There's a lot of names that always rank high but you rarely hear. Royal names in the UK are a good example, I've not met or worked with a single William or George and just 1 Edward since I moved here nearly ten years ago. Aside of course knowing of the famous counterparts. Elizabeth for girls is a similar deal, never met any of them either (not even a Liz) even though supposedly there's a lot around.



Me and my partner's firstborn became Benjamin since it's one of the few western names that's the exact same in both English and Finnish (and we both liked the name). Makes it easier for our families and the kid wherever he goes to once he grows up if he only has to spell out his last name.

And lol Cesaria, there's also like a gazillion Thomases around at the moment, five in my Facebook friends' babies/toddlers atm alone. And every one of theirs mum/dad thinks s/he thought of a classical but original name. I could not name my kid fucking Thomas, ever. Having started watching Thomas the tank engine in the last year it's the most depressing piece of children's TV I have ever seen.

Just make sure whatever you name him you use correct phonetics. I can't stand it when I see all these 'unique' names and all I think is damn, his/her parents were illiterate.

I have a student named Daphyne. She pronounces it like the normal daphne, but it's spelled daph-een. It annoys the hell out of me the lengths that people go to be 'unique' and it's idiotic. There is nothing wrong with having a normally spelled name.
I have another one Milissa instead of Melissa...I mean really cmon. I see some histerical ones too like Shithead (Shi-they'd) and I even saw someone name their kid Abcde (Ab-seh-de) Real person we did a skip trace on them.

Just try not to be unique to the point of stupidity. Your kid will be the one paying for it their entire life.

Personally my wife and I like these names.

Me and my wife have our girl name picked out, Eve. I'm trying to convince her to name our son Rock but she's not having it.

Although I never want or plan on having kids, I've always had a list of favorite "boy" names. I tend to use some of them for the name of my pets in games since I always refer to them as male.

Yep, we had huffnagle brothers in hs, they were just known as bug huff and little huff, though neither were little.
