I think it depends on what you enjoy figuring out. XIV doesn't help you out a lot and just throws you in the game with hardly any hints. Even the instruction booklet has no information.

Or, if you just wanted to act like a douche, why cry like a toddler about how others are incapable of understanding that "different people play differently" when you were called on it?

You're not even logically consistent in your whining. Considering that that's your thing, you should get better at it.
I think you're the one that's a bit off-base here. If I'm going to say different strokes for different folks, why would I have a problem with those who love that feeling of minimalism and semi-helplessness? I have no problem with that whatsoever, even if its not my cup of tea - that's the whole theme of "different strokes for different folks"; my problem is with you in general, always bashing those that offer any opinion that is contrary to the SE purist. I think you need to slow down a bit and read a bit more before you try using words that you don't exactly understand.

@Corr: Pretty much. Some like that style; others do not. It is what it is. I don't think its enough to break a game; its just coincidence that lacking direction combined with lacking features and polish led to this game ending up in the F2P bargain bin 2 months into its lifespan.

OH NO HIS PROBLEM IS WITH ME EVERYONE! If you say dumb shit, I'm going to tell you that you do. And you do- nonstop. I'm not an SE fanboy and I don't even like this game. But you constantly say stupid shit. If you don't like me telling you that, there's an easy fix: stop saying stupid shit.

You always have the attitude and choice of words that constantly seem to underestimate views that oppose your own.

    You are a douche, lol.

    Also Achi, lol.

    Tips for new players:
    - Don't play any job past rank 20 for now
    - Start with a mage if you ever think you might want to play one because they are EZ mode and have cheap and plentiful weapons
    - Take your VIT to 40 before even touching another stat
    - Level alchemy on vendor fish in Limsa. Ignore all other crafts. Seriously. People will fix your shit for practically nothing you don't need them. Fishing sucks don't do that either
    - If you run out of anima, take a week break without playing at all

There are actually tons of new players coming in on buddy keys, though they burn out around rank 25 and quit.

edit: I say fishing sucks and then I try it for the first time in 2 months and have really good luck catching crystal fish. I must have been doing something wrong. Alchemy/fishing and alchemy/botany are both good combinations.

For botany, buy a scythe to go along with your hatchet, go to Gridania, chop down the closest two trees you see outside of the eastern gate of the city, use the scythe on the grass to reset these trees, repeat. Save all Maple Sap and Willow Logs.

Fishing is the easiest shit. Just turn on the TV or a movie while you mash away at it and you'll walk away with stacks and stacks of recipe ingredients for cooking and/or alchemy. All for the cost of a few lures or a few stacks of 2-gil worms.

    Just cancelled my subscription.

I'm not going to give the long list why, because I don't want it to turn in to one of "those threads" but normally after a few days of playing an MMORPG I can tell if I'd like it.
I appreciate the way SE have tried to move away from the typical MMORPG AH/leveling system, but it doesn't work for me (and evidently most players).

I'll keep an eye on the update notes and see if there is anything that will tempt me back.

On topic: My new player to new player tip would be to shout for a teleport to the other cities once you have done all your level10 leves in your starting city and just keep doing the leves there. I thought i was stuck in 1 city untill higher level. going from city to city gives you a lot more leves/levels

Exactly how I feel. I was looking forward to the feeling of starting a new epic game. Like when i started a new job on FFXI the music and levelling gave me nostalgia and i would think "damn, i love the feeling of starting it all over new". With XIV... not so much. It's all stop and start, not just smooth sailing like i get with most games.

As for progressing past 10, the Rank 10 leves should automatically pop up, and the location of the camp is marked on your map, and within 1000 yalms of the first camp. I did some running around early on to grab future camp aetherytes in case I wanted to port there and grind with no leves. It's pretty easy to avoid agro now that you have a full monster rader, so it's never really a problem. Once you do your leves you can easily hang around the camp, killing the surrounding mobs and doing Behest. You should also do the local leves as they bump up your XP, the price of entry is buying the starter tool of a craft for 1200~ gil, and from then on it's all profit, XP, and crafting SP. There is no reason whatsoever to not do some crafting on the side, since you can do it for free and benefit on multiple fronts.

Be prepared to read wikis and databases. It helps a lot in you log in with a clear plan of progression for the evening. It can be as simple as saying, 'I'll burn through all my leves on this one class, then when I am finished I will grind Botany in the field until I log out - or you can have a huge list if recipes and where to get the resources and pour gil into a certain craft you want. You should use wikis to note at what level you unlock story quests, class quests, next leve camp, etc.

For Point Allotment, like most people I have an almost Diablo-like approach, get more VIT for HP. You will probably be soloing a lot and playing a hybrid class in small groups, so you need to be able to take a lot of hits. And since MP can get quite limited, get MND for MP.

If you are coming from WoW or something similar, you should be aware that leveling multiple classes on one character is something you can and SHOULD do. Once again it's something you will get nothing but benefits from, with just a little bit of time investment.

    OH SHIT RERAILED.

Plenty of stuff on the horizon. Hopefully it all lights a fire under SE's collective asses so they can get to work.

A small tip, something I dumbly missed at first. When doing local leves, you get ~twice as many materials than you need. But don't just think of this as a safety net for failures. You should always do the extra synths until you used everything up, as it's another thing that can only be good. You don't get to keep the materials, it's extra SP and XP earned from the synths, and the extra completed items get added to your evaluation, meaning an improved reward. Before I was just handing the leve straight in as soon as I'd done the required synths, which is obviously wasteful and inefficient.

Twice is a bit misleading. You get 2 more sets of materials than what you need. If I had a quest requesting 5 items I'd have 7 shots at it.

    Very good sir.

Another quickie, for some early pocket change, you'll probably find you have a whole fistful of crystals that you aren't using early on after say, leveling 3-4 classes to 10. Go put your retainer in the Crystalier Ward and sell them at whatever the surrounding rates are. I made 100k over night which is very nice for picking up your first set of gear and accessories.

As far as battle jobs go, I'd recommend the following leveling order:

    for GLA:
    CON to 4 (Cure)
PGL to 10 (Second Wind+Taunt+a WS to use TP on)
    CON to 8 (Shock Spikes)
    MRD to 10 (Skull Sunder+Bloodbath+Defender)
    LNC to 6 (Ferocity+Trammel)

    for other DoW:
    PGL to 6
    CON to 8
    MRD to 8
    LNC to 6

Your primary job should be good for a while at that point. Later on, you should do the following:

LNC to 20 (Invigorate+Feint+Fleet of Foot)
    THM to 20 (Stygian+Barbs+Sac2+SiphonMP)
    PGL to 20 (Prime Conditioning)

    for DoM:
    PGL to 6
CON to 8 or THM to 10 (whichever one you aren't maining)

    Later on:
    PGL to 20

It also bears mentioning that it is in your best interest to have at least one DoM and DoW job leveled to guildmark rank. That's the easiest way to enable you to buy all of the stat-modifying traits (which work for the opposite group of the class you buy them on).

    Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks a lot to all the people contributing non-ranty BS. I've recently started myself (and am actually quite enjoying it thus far, I'm playing pretty casually what with the lack of fees making me feel I should be getting my money's worth or anything) and it's all a little daunting at first.
Another thing I'd add for anyone who's just started and is in a similar position to me, keep an eye on the guild leve reset timer on various fansites. I started 3 days ago and didn't really know about it, only did 4 battle leves and 2 craft leves (was sort of exploring and doing story stuff) and they reset, lots of wasted potential there D:

Here's a question though; does anyone know of a good social LS on Palamecia? I shouted a couple of times and people were insistent that I rank up before getting into one, when I pretty much just liked the social side of it at this point.
