ATTN: NYC BGers Update: Home found!

OK folks, I know this is a long shot, but here goes…

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at [email protected]. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

    -SCOUT

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

Dog was left to die in Blizzard, very friendly pitbull, about 1-2 years old, very obedient, and friendly, If she doesn't find a home soon, she'll be put down

If I didn't leave on the other side of the country I would consider taking her. We have a pitbull/sharpei mix and a queensland healer but we also have 2 acres of land for them to run around on. Sad story .

I really hope they find a home for the dog.

That sucks to hear, what kind of douchebag does that to an innocent animal. This is why some people shouldn't have pets, the puppy novelty wears off and they can't take care of it.

    Me and noone around here can take care of it though, they're started banning dogs like this from being in the buildings cause of the mentality about them ;_;

I just got a blue nose pitbull last night, cutest little thing ever, and so nice. I wish I didn't live all the way in cali D: I'd definitely take it.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I hate to say it because it's such a sad story, but I'm not sure anyone in NY might be able to take the dog for the reason cleverness said. If I understand it right NY took pit bulls off the BSL list a few years back, so instead building owners have put bans on them instead. Needless to say, if someone wants to take it make sure your allowed to have it in your building. It might be better for the owners to try and have it sent to a rescue somewhere in a state that's more pit bull friendly.

I came in here to say something along the lines of "great idea taking an off-the-street pitbull that was probably treated like shit into your home, you might as well wear a sign around your neck saying 'I really want to be sued when this dog I know nothing about bites some 4 year old'"

But fuck that is a beautiful dog.

Is this dog in the Bronx? I can ask my parent's if they want to consider it but, I already have an older (9y/o) male pug that I have to consider. What are the other particular's about the dog if anything just so if my parent's ask I can tell them. Like shots and other stuff.

Looks like a great dog. Wish I could take her but I dont even have my own place. If it were a month or two earlier I probably could have convinced my cousin to take her in, but she has 2 pit bulls now. She doesnt need a third.

No such thing as a blue nose, only breed of pitbull is APBT. This misconception pisses me off that there are different kinds of pit bulls.

OP: Rag, I know the situation you're in. My wife and I rescue pit bull's in our area, Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has only one pit bull rescue league and it's not a shelter at all, they just help you find a placement for them. I can't believe NY doesn't have any pit bull rescue's. I have two small kid's and one on the way and never felt my kid's were in any harm at all. My 4 yr old son rides them around the house like they're horses.

Here's a few pit bull rescue organization's if you have time to contact them and talk to them:

    http://www.strayfromtheheart.org

    http://www.animalfarmfoundation.org

    http://www.outofthepits.org

If they can't take your dog I'm sure they can help you or your friend find a home for her.

Was gonna ask around for ya, but happy ending @ the source. People do some sick shit to pit bulls to toughen them up/make them viscous.. wonder if this person stumbled upon the middle of something like that.

If I didn't have 2 small dogs and a couple cats I'd probably take her. Goodluck, pitbulls can be great dogs depending on their owners.

Bah, now I miss the pitbull/boxer mix my friends and I fostered/adopted. Wish I could have dogs at my current place, I miss her

I have no idea how you bring yourself to take a dog to a shelter knowing its going to be killed, I'd be a fucking wreck. Hope I read a happy ending to this later.
