Looks like it didn't do that well opening week.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Square Enix PS3 524,217 units sold

FFXIII had 1.5mil units sold opening week.

It wasn't going to sell just as much anyway considering SE shipped like 950k units.
We'll have to wait and see how this week went.
Honestly it's no surprise, games in Japan have been selling like that lately. Vita's release didn't really help either I guess.

Considering that it's a sequel of a game that has received somewhat mixed reception, I'd say that those numbers are actually good. XIII-2 obviously didn't cost nearly as much as XIII to make and with all the DLC planned for it SE is definitely going to earn a lot.
It's also not out of the question that if this game gets consistently good user reviews, like it did so far, more people who were initially skeptical about it will change their mind and buy it later.

doesnt Crisis Core not qualify because its main character isn't someone you could control before? but even then was a pretty fun game, even if it werent related to FFVII.
I liked the randomness. it was like gambling and gets really fun when you're on a roll. I loved the way 'breaking' hp limit was done too.. there were a lot of good traits to that game that let me overlook the bad. that said.. grinding was a chore and because it was more action oriented enemies got boring pretty fast. also when you end up using costly punch on everything, nothing is really a challenge anymore. I actually grinded to max level.. by setting up my character to counter and doing the ridiculous number of shinra soldiers mission and going afk.

I think XIII-2's mood is definitely lighter than XIII. If anything, its definitely a lot less grandiose - and the music really makes that clear. That said, it hasn't gotten to the point of light-hearted, which was one of the very things that people didn't like X-2 about.. because the shift was very drastic - i however thought it was awesomefun.

Well in that case FFXIII-2 doesn't qualify either because we couldn't control neither Serah nor Noel in the previous game.

    Agreed.

Though hopefully it'll eventually sell almost as much (or at least a large enough amount for SE to consider making another sequel) later.

FFXIII sold mostly on hype (which is why I can understand why a lot were disappointed with it. ~5 years in the making and no towns?) but FFXIII-2 will sell based on past reception of the game (mixed) and reviews/word of mouth. Hopefully the positive reviews/word of mouth will get sales going.

While the first week isn't much as FFXIII, we'll have to see how the numbers do the rest of the week. Some games sell high the first week, then drop off. Other game sales are consistent for several weeks which can make the sales on par with the former.

If you mean going the FFXIII-2 route though, as in actually improving the original game without straying too much from it (and sticking to the same console), then I could see it working.
Among the FF sequels, FFXIII-2 is the closest one to the general definition of it.
I wouldn't mind a FFXIII-3 for Lightning alone, not to mention the battle system, the story and the setting. I'm not tired of them yet.
Yeah that's what I meant (not a movie sequel or a third person shooter spin off but just regular FF RPG games).

What I'd like to see is SE taking a cast of characters for several games. They should be with the quality on par (or better) with the main game in story and gameplay. Also they should attempt to keep focusing on the main cast (again it'd be interesting to see how well SE can keep the same cast of characters through several games. There can still be new characters too but they should have some from the previous game).

For me, that sort of counts as to what I was talking about earlier.

Hope does have a major role in FFXIII-2 so we do get to see what he's doing after the game. Obviously though I'd prefer scenarios where we can play as the previous characters (I love Vanille) but them returning and having a major role is good enough (as long as they'll be eventually playable in maybe post game content or something. DLC I am counting on you).

As for Crisis Core I'd say it's close enough too since a lot of the previous cast like Aerith, Cloud, and Tifa (and Yuffie if you do the side missions) were involved a decent amount in the story even though you controlled just Zack.

Personally I'd prefer them expanding FFXIII via sequels over prequels... unless it's exploring Gran Pulse 500 years ago starring Vanille of course. Though I'm not sure how long they could make the game; maybe a simple flashback of those events would be enough instead.

On a side note, I really want to make every single developer sit and replay XIII over and over and over again so they can understand why the pacing was so terrible in that game.

My only complaint about another 13 game is the fact that Versus will continue to be backburnered as a result. Honestly, I thought 13, like 10, ended on a high note and that continuations of the story were not necessary.

Now, if they had simply taken the characters of FF13-2, changed their names and appearances, and called it Chrono Break, you bet your ass I'd be more excited.

Also, they should just remake 7 at this point - they've been teasing it for years. Cut Cait Sith as a playable character and make him an NPC without the goddamn moogle robot while giving him some kind of support role (he can be your materia fusion guy or whatever), redesign the battle system so it's fast-paced like 10-2 or 13-2, keep all the minigames. Boom, I just made SE millions.

mm i kinda meant it in the sense that the character is prominent in the story that they're noticeable (already there) and like.. impact your story.
I think only X-2 and XIII-2 really meet up to that criteria..
like.. they seem pretty clever in picking their characters to allow for development.
Vincent was optional. Zack was a plot point only in Cloud and Aerith's past. You know nothing about Turks. Ceodore was never born. Did I miss out any other sequels?

Yuna and Serah are the only protagonists who you know something about before entering into the game... but at the same time they are slightly different by then.. and paine is kinda like noel

They had an interview a few days/weeks ago where one of the devs (forgot which) said that SE is kind of afraid to touch VII because they'd want to change/cut/add stuff but at the same time they don't want to alienate the fanbase. They don't think a pure FFVII remake would do very well, because of the old battle system and stuff. The point being is that they are trying to repair the Final Fantasy brand, and they don't want to damage it further by remaking one of the most memorable games in gaming history and having it flop.

Well of course not. That's why I listed some of the things I did.

Overall, changes to the battle system to make it fast-paced like current gen FF and an extreme update to the materia system would be all that would need to happen to make a remake successful. For example, they could introduce a sixth color of materia that functions as a combo materia: when two characters have these materia equipped, basic combo attacks can be performed - but when combo materia are linked with normal magic or command materia are where things could get sublimely interesting.

The problem being that if they are going to put forth the effort in writing everything from scratch and developing a new battle system from scratch... because very little would actually carry over from the original title besides names/places/general storyline... they might as well just make a new title instead of possibly scarring an old favorite held in such high regard.

Versus is made by a completely different team. FFXIII-2 didn't slow down anything, that was Type 0. Ever since Type 0 has been released Versus went into full production.

They hit the nail on the head, if the released FF7 just with better graphics it wouldnt work. If they did too much fans would be pissed. Middle ground would be extremely hard to reach with that remake.

Can't say I blame them. If you want your VII fix, whip out your old copy, get it off PSN, or just watch Advent Children lol

On topic, really loving this soundtrack.. Ruined Hometown and Caius's Theme are my favorites.

Ahem... Ladies and Gentlemen. I would like to make an announcement regarding the ending of FFXIII-2:

    Spoiler: show
According to some translations I saw during work today(slow as fuck) it seems like the ending seems a lot better with context. I mentioned before that I only watched the ending(s) and had a very little idea of what they were saying save, some shitty as fuck amateur translators. I ran into a post today that summed up everything that happened in the game in regards to the plot by someone who understands Japanese and English. Again this is a fan translation but it sheds a lot of light on what happened during the game, especially the ending: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/61931...iii-2/61449051

While it still sucks that we didn't get to see a lot of Lightning even though she was marketed so heavily, I could completely come to terms with this type of ending. I do hope that they make FFXIII-3 so we can see what Caius and Yeul are up to. Post FFXIII-2 Yeul can no longer see the future, and Caius was able to escape death and continue living even though Valhalla was brought into the real world. The FNC pretty much ends where XIII-2 ends, so it'll be interesting to see what they do with the next installment, if there even is one.

Well if anyone wants to watch JP version of FFXIII-2 on youtube, Split Infinity has nearly completed FFXIII-2.

He is still missing a few videos from the ending parts though but will probably upload them soon.

Some spoilers from the walkthrough (just from a near the end part but not the actual ending part of the game):
    Spoiler: show

Vanille appears (16 min mark)! Yes it's that scene from the trailer. Though of course I'm not sure what's going on exactly. Seems like a weird dream sequence. Also sadly this seems to be only one of two times Vanille appears AFAIK (the other time is in a paradox ending).

Vanille + Serah in FFXIII (English):

Lots of FFXIII music in XIII-2 which is good.

    @Burningthought
    Spoiler: show
Wow. Definitely interesting. Remember back when we only knew of FFXIII? Those were much simpler times. Yep I hate time travel stories even more. Too much crazy stuff >.<.

Though since the game did end in a "To be continued", I assume there's still stuff left to explore?

Spoilered just in case but pretty much really vague talk about the story:
    Spoiler: show
Actually I pretty much forgot about the TBC completely. That's a good sign for a continuation with some context in mind. XIII was interesting, but I love the story a lot more with the time travel included. This is also making me love the FNC a lot more too, I feel smart by looking at the FNC to some answers as to what the fuck was going on in the story and where the story might go from there. I'm even more interested in getting my hands on the game so I can read the primers and talk to npcs and squeeze some more info out of the game lol.

Famitsu gave the game a 40/40 (moneyhatted, clearly) and it still sold like shit. You're hoping against hope.
