Lol at people crying/bitching at a review, because reviews have always been accurate and a good source of information.

And story IS the biggest part of an RPG. Unless the game has some incredibly orgasmic gameplay, it's not going to make up for a terrible storyline.

I'd say the opposite is also true...

This explains why RPGs with outright terrible or nonexistant stories such as Pokemon and Skyrim are more popular than these so-called RPGs with GOOD stories, right?
You'd be surprised at how few people who are looking for a good story are compared to those who are looking for solid gameplay.

at least for the general RPG crowd, seems like more people like gameplay than story.

appears to be the case with FFXI anyway.

A good story can obviously make a game better, but for the most part, you are playing the game more than you are following the story. To me, the gameplay being good can always outweigh a bad story. Pretty much the only reason I liked FFX-2 was for that reason.

Just my opinion though, I don't want to start an argument. >.>

While I like both, I think gameplay is more important

I mean; it's much more bearable to play a game with awesome gameplay and horrible story, than the other way around. If all you had to do was run up a bunch of stairs for 30 min in-between all the AWESOME storyline segments and cutscenes, then people would grow tired of the game very quick. A bad story is forgivable; bad gameplay is not - in my opinion.

If all you wanted was a good story, then there's both books and movies.

The store I ordered it at texted me saying the shipment was in and I could go buy it. That was 10min before they closed. So I'll just have to wait another 14 hours now before I can get it.

I'd put a stream up if I knew how to

I had no idea this game was coming out so soon lol
I thought it was a few months off but then I saw we got them in at work.
All I can wonder is how a sequel to FF13 came out before Versus and Agito did when the latter 2 were announced at the same time the original FF13 was.

and I'll through in my 2 cents in the current rage debate; Great gameplay can make a bad story not matter; Bayonetta, Demon/Dark Souls, Resident Evil etc. Great Story and bad gameplay, not so much, but it does happen from time to time. Not that I can think of any.

I'll buy it, it's just not gonna be day 1

When I play an RPG I want a good story, interesting non-annoying characters, immersive world to explore, good music, fun gameplay. Last time SE hit on most of those for me was FFT even though the world was not immersive due to how the game was but it did have tons of backstory to build depth about everything that went on prior to the lionwar and during the war itself.

To this day Delita is the most interesting, deepest character they ever wrote, you never knew what he was going to do next. The character pretty much kept you thinking whether or not he was good or evil until the very last bit of the game. The story was A+, a perfect mix of religion, politics, legend, mystery, you wanted to know what happened next, you wanted to know who would kill who and how it would happen. The game was a master piece, the only gripe I ever had with the game is that balance got way out of hand at the middle part of the game after starting off pretty balanced.

I couldn't agree more with this, Delita is easily one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters ever. He had such a broad range of emotions and brilliant character dynamic. There are so many memorable scenes from FFT, it really was a classic.

and i used Delitas portrait for PlayOnline while on FFXI haha

Not to derail or anything... but ppl don't play Skryim for its innovative and amazing gameplay lol. /sarcasmoff

I personally think that FFT's plot went downhill and never really recovered once Ramza's entire personality shifted into "I must save my sister I don't care how many people I need to kill" mode. It was so much in your face to the point the whole politic/religion stuff going on became more of a background subplot than else and this was a huge mistake on Square's part.
And the gameplay was never balanced lol. You just need to grind 10 minutes at the start of the game to get incredibly broken stuff such as Auto-Potion (which IS broken if you sell regular potions and keep the better ones) and Ramza's speed+ skill that makes every fight a joke.

See, even though you have a legitimate opinion not everyone sees things that way. If you want to find a flaw you will find it. It's the same with every other game.

Skyrim's world has more immersion than anything SE's ever done that includes both MMO worlds, lol. Exploring in Skyrim is > than hallway, CS, trash mobs, hallway, cs, BOSS, next chapter or running through fields of high power aggressive mobs with sneak/invisible on or chocobo'ing around maps that have absolutely no meaning in over 90% of the game world in XIV.

I don't think it's worth trying to justify crappy storytelling by saying 'it's a game, so gameplay' because that's not a way to improve the RPG industry. More emphasis should be put on trying to bring quality stories in to be on par with gameplay so that everyone's satisfied and there's not this kind of 'one-or-the-other' thing you tend to see in a lot of games, and even then it's usually the story that's kicked aside.

I don't really see why games as a whole struggle in this element, surely it can't be that hard to find decent writers..

As for FFT, I enjoyed the story (although I agree it went a bit "Ramza smash" towards the end). I'd actually quite like to see if SE could have another shot at the rivalry thing between 2 main characters without devolving it into the craptastic dark v light thing they have going on recently with characters like Lightning and Caius. Also, they need to shut the fuck up avoid the 'void' and 'nothingness' in their stories, it was never a good motivation and it still isn't.

Played the demo last night just to try out the pet mechanic and see if there was anything new I wasn't aware. My only complaint walking away from it...

    Spoiler: show
WHY GOD WHY DID YOU MAKE THE MOOGLE TALK? It's chirps and whistles were adorable, there's no reason to make it actually talk <_>

^probably late to the game on that, but my heart sank once it started talking and actually said "Kupo".

Yeah it was easy to break battles in FFT, but replay value is really high IMO. Some of the challenges are really fun and rather difficult, beastmaster Ramza (Ramza as Mediator plus four mobs for every fight) required a lot of grinding.

Leave subtitles on, mute volume. Problem Solved.
