cant say with much certainty cos its still a demo and all, but the battles appear to be less tactically rigid.. like they did manage to kill the scalebeast without even staggering it..

Well it's not exactly the same.
Auto-battle can even be completely removed this time and the summon system seems different:
Spoiler: show
I noticed this, slightly disappointing really. I'd prefer they built from it and included more systems like stagger (although some alternative options in battle so it isn't JUST focussed on staggering things), rather than make it weaker.
I was also a bit disappointed to hear they were tackling it in a "You don't have to have played the first one to know what's happening" thing, there were a lot of unanswered questions following the first game. I'm also pretty skeptical about it really being a 'darker' story, being as so far it seems they've thrown the more serious themes and world out the window (Like, that moogle would've looked totally out of place in XIII, and sort of does in XIII-2 at this point)

Lightning Is Playable In Final Fantasy XIII-2 And She’s Super Powerful
Even though everyone thinks Lightning is dead, she is a playable character in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Attendees didn’t see her on the show floor, but in a behind closed doors meeting Square Enix showed a fight between Lightning and Chaos Bahamut.

Before the battle, Lightning jumped on Odin. The camera panned to city ruins and Chaos Bahamut flew from the sky and into Lightning’s path. The camera continued to move during the battle where Lighting rode Odin while Chaos Bahamut lunged at her.

Lightning saved the world in Final Fantasy XIII, so she is not a level 1 character in Final Fantasy XIII-2. She retains powerful attacks, five selectable commands, and pelted Chaos Bahamut with thousands of points of damage. Compare that to Serah and newcomer Noel who scratch out a couple hundred HP per strike on weak enemies.
The battle galloped on until a cinematic action where Lightning jumped on a falling building and cut into Chaos Bahamut. Like other cinematic actions, players had to trigger quick time events.

Square Enix wouldn’t say anything else about where Lightning is other than promising a reveal at Tokyo Game Show. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is slated for a winter release in North America and Europe. Japan gets the game in December.
i think that in itself is a special cinematic battle tho.. like.. throughout the battle Lightning is perpetually riding Odin whilst fighting Chaos Bahamut.. so its not a 'static' battle like all XIII battles were
Battle system now may still be tweaked before release after they hear opinions on it, similar to XIII changing between AC demo and release. Also I like Vanilles voice fuck the haters.

People shouldn't be assuming that the demo at E3 represent what is close to the final version of the battle system. I wouldn't be surprised that, aside of the stuff they're still working on, a lot of new options were still blocked, because they don't want to reveal stuff yet.
I wonder what the lack of auto-battle means? I hope it's a difficulty setting thing.
SE already said that some features are not in the demo and will be revealed later on. I think it's way too early to talk about disappointment regarding the battle system. I think it's easily the best in the series anyway.
It's never too early to talk disappointment with SE. It's usually a safe bet to say that they'll fail.
half of the people who think certain parts of the game are good or bad actually base it on their expectations of the game..
so set ur expectations really low and you'll probably enjoy it. Tabula Rasa, as they say.
Of the FFs ive tried doing this for.. I've managed to enjoy all of them, except for FFXIV, which was a true abomination
By fail, i meant mediocre shit and all around being a terrible company. But it's okay if you're into that sort of thing.
FFS could everyone realize that selling millions does not make something good and just because you didn't like something doesn't make it a failure, its the same redundant shit every few pages. Regardless of opinion selling millions of copies usually means it was a success, sure it could be so horrible it severely impacts the future pf the franchise causing a major decline in future sales but realistically XIV is the only Final Fantasy title that would apply to, everything else is subjective.

Lightning vs Chaos Bahamut video:
Fight looks cool, it seems like its a scripted battle for that section of the game while playing as lightning and not just a stand alone segment and thats all you get.

Oh shit, SE's games arent masterpieces but they can still be entertaining. Lynch them.
Maybe it's because I have never considered any of their games 'great' is why I like most of them. And I don't see that changing with versus, 13-2 nor type-0 either. They won't be perfect, but I'll enjoy playing them.
They are fun to play.
