I think they already blamed the decidedly short development time for the lack of cutscenes and general carbon copies of XIII's systems.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Play Chance Coming Soon
Tetsuya Nomura and art director Isamu Kamikokuryo share some comments with Famitsu.
A recent comment from Tetsuya Nomura regarding Final Fantasy XIII-2 has some players excited about the possibility of an early play opportunity. In an interview in this week's Famitsu (summed up at Sokuho), Nomura said that he believes players will have a chance to try out the game soon.
The question, of course, is what Nomura means by "soon." Many had expected a playable build to be Square Enix's main attraction at the Tokyo Game Show, which will be held in mid September, a few months ahead of the game's December Japanese release.
Although TGS is two months away, he could be referring to it. Or, as early fans of Noel's good looks must be hoping, perhaps he's referring to a pre-TGS demo event or even a downloadable demo.
Also in his Famitsu interview, Nomura reiterated the character design division of labor for FFXIII-2. He's working on the faces for Noel and the new characters. Clothing and other areas are being drawn by Yusuke Naora and Isamu Kamikokuryou. His main role on the game is character design supervision.
Reactions from those who actually played FFXIII-2 at E3 was good, Nomura remarked. He's disappointed that some are judging it just based off videos from E3, though. He feels that players will truly get the feeling of what the staff is putting into the game when they see it running on actual hardware, and said that the impression when you directly play differs greatly from seeing videos.
Famitsu also spoke briefly with Kamikokuryo, the game's art director. Kamikokuryo said that he's currently working on the sketches of the visual that will be shown around the time of the game's release.
Who knows, we might get the download of E3 demo D; But nah, I don't think they would do that, seeing as it was still missing new gameplay elements they're supposed to add.
The more I read this thread the more I realize the last epic FF everyone agreed on was FFX.
EDIT: Not to mention "To Zanarkand" is still to this day one of the most epic themes.
Ironically FFX used to be considered extremely disappointing for its downgraded battle system, awkard character design and dialogue (dear god the laughing scene...), sadistic minigames and the usual not-real-issues-that-are-blown-out-of-proportion-by-the-fans like its linear design, lack of world map and interactive airship.
Then a few years passed and now people see it on par with the PSX FFs. 12 and 13 will join them as soon as people wake up and realize how good both of them are.
^ Or until a new FF comes out that people can bitch about not being as cool as the previous ones.
Having Final Fantasy in front of the name add's +10 to the drama of the fans/haters automatically. Holy shit I wish some of the message boards from back when FF8 came out where still live, the amount of mad from that was the first glimpse of what the internet is among RPG fans today.
Blitzball was the shit tho
This and Auron are pretty much the only things I liked about FFX, period.
I love XII and XIII, in different ways because they both brought great things to the series. I really dislike FFX to the point that it begins to anger me that people keep saying it was good/excellent/the last good FF/etc.
I adored FFX. The laughing scene is designed to be awkward, although yeah... it is very awkward to watch too.
Wasn't a huge fan of FFX. I never connected with Tidus and Yuna at all. Auron was cool, Rikku was nice to look at, and Sin wasn't a terrible idea. Other than that,
While playing FFX-2, I remember thinking that the Tidus/Yuna analogues would've made FFX much more interesting had they been the main characters.
To some it was the first FF/RPG they have played. As such, it was a mind-blowing experience to them. The sheer size and scope, not to mention the focus on story. Being used to 5 hour crash bandicoots and tomb raiders it can be only something totally new and awesome.
Of course I was one of those people (even though I started playing games with an Amiga in '95). That doesn't stop me from looking at the game objectively now that I've somewhat matured, but fuck if it wasn't totally awesome back then. I still love the setting nevertheless.
Why can't XII and XIII be the same way for some people? These games have the kind of charm that works once. It's too bad the English language has only one term for "an experience", because there are two kinds. One of them is much harder to replicate than the other.
These days, not knowing what to expect from the franchise makes it great, even if the current problems in management and development are dire and obvious. Theatrhythm final fantasy? Dissidia? Brilliant!
How about a MH FF next?
FFX was my favorite with FFT up there too, probably my favorite games of all time also.
Blitzball; gimmie sum mo'.
People liked the SNES/PSX final fantasies because back then the market focus was almost entirely on home consoles, the Gameboy notwithstanding. If you weren't playing Pokemon, you were waiting for the next FF game to come out.
Nowadays if a kid growing up wants to play video games, he borrow's dad's iPhone and plays casual games. Or his parents buy him a phone and he plays those games. Or he owns a DS and that's fine because his friends take theirs to school, too. The experience isn't anywhere near as homogenous, therefore 12/13 are incapable of occupying the same nostalgic space. The franchise simply as consistently good anymore, either. To be expected from one with 13 (oops I forgot, 14) titles in the core games and countless spinoffs.
Saw this on Tumblr, don't know if it's been posted yet, but....

Real person.
It's not too often you see girls cosplaying at the appropriate body type/size/weight.
The last epic FF was FFVI. You know this in your heart to be true.
I didn't enjoy FFX at all and remember forcing myself to finish. FFXII was great tho. My biggest gripe with the series is moving away from tons of options for weps and armor. I hate the one weapon that can be "upgraded" and 2 accessory slots
