Prometheus (June 8, 2012)

Just got back from the seeing it, generally disappointing movie for me. I just expected more from it. Didn't live up to the hype for me at all. Three of us went, got one saying it was good and me and another just looked at each other and said dam we paid 3d money for this much less money at all.

Saw this tonight shortly after work. Probably a bit of a mistake on my part since I only had a couple hours of sleep before work. I felt fine til I got into the movie then I felt drowsy during the whole thing. After it was over, I felt it was nothing more than a set up for a prequel. And I don't mean the first Alien movie either.

The movie was acceptable, but left me disappointed. Definitely a letdown for my friends who weren't down with the other Aliens.

thematically it's a mess, it doesn't scare, the narrative only serves to propel poorly written characters from one event to the next, and the thrills are the kind generated by any other violent summer blockbuster

This sounds like all the other Alien movies including the AvP ones. I'll probably like it in a turn_brain_off way

That's how I'd put it as well. It felt to me that they had a 6 hour story to tell but had to shove it into two hours, so they just kind of skipped over certain important things to make it fit. I didn't hate it by any means, but there's a decent list of logic gaps that irk the crap out of me:

• Robot who can't feel feelings...except for the ones that he can, which make him act like a total jerk

• Alien super-race makes biological weapons capable of eradicating entire planets...but doesn't make like, laser guns or some shit in case said bioweapon gets out of control?

• On the same note, alien super-race makes fantastic ships capable of interstellar travel...that you turn on with an old flute

• A biologist who is there solely to study alien life forms is told there's a potential living alien life form down the hall and he pulls a Scooby Doo G-G-G-GHOSTS?? and runs the other way

• Super-advanced medical surgery device that is the greatest medical thing ever but is only set to work on one sex...and is stationed in the quarters of someone of the opposite sex

• Giant vertical, but relatively narrow, structure threatening to crush you...noone just runs sideways

• Woman covered in blood with her belly cut open and stapled closed in her underwear enters a room, noone even acknowledges that or asks what the fuck happened, they're just like hey, welcome to the room, let's carry on

• Said woman can barely walk due to her injuries...except for when she can sprint and jump 10-foot gaps

• Charlize Theron didn't show me her boobies

I wouldn't say he CANT feel feelings, there are just some he can not grasp. He seems to be a almost sentient AI. He never gets upset, he just rationalizes things. He picked Charlie based on Charlie's attitude towards him, you could call it "jealousy" but he was instructed to "try harder" so he calculated who would be the best choice and went with Charlie.

It is kind of strange that a military facility has no...guns...of any kind. Maybe it was more a laboratory and the military guys got the fuck out and left the lab rats to die in the building.

Where the FUCK where they all running to? (The engineers). You see the hologram of their last moments...and some make it in the room with the big human face...but you only see ONE body that got decapitated at the door...where did the others go that ran in that room? Also why run into that room? They don't even really talk about the whole holocaust thing either with all the dead bodies. Was there an outbreak and that killed them? Did the guards of the facility just get orders to wipe out the scientists because of an issue?

Terrible.

Tried to juggle 6 main characters and as many story arcs and dropped them all.

By trying to make me care about all of the characters, they made me care about 0 of the characters, and they sacrificed the story just to make the attempt.

Aliens not looking like Aliens, and face huggers not looking like face huggers, in Prometheus... wouldn't make any sense... not unless this bullshit is time traveling... which makes it even more retarded. They stated that this wasn't an Alien prequel, but that it takes place in the same universe... but hey let's use the same continuity. Scott also said if he was to do a sequel of Prometheus, he might as well remake Alien. If the AVP movies are in the same continuity then the Aliens would have already been evolved and look like what they are supposed to look like. Unless everything that was here evolved into what they look like because of us. Which wouldn't explain the face huggers.

I was under the impression that the aliens are based on what they gestate in so there could be a bajillion variations of them. Resident Evil-sized face hugger evolving into small ones, who knows since I forget how they come about in the canon.

Thinking back on the movie it reminds me of another movie which I enjoyed more and I thought it had more character development, though its "aliens" looked a bit retarded -- Pandorum. Wouldnt say its a better movie, just I enjoyed it alot more.

If the Aliens in the AVP movies were intended for the predators then they would end up looking like the Human ones once the predators start ritualizing the use of them with humans as hosts? By the time Prometheus rolls around they've made some batches for use on humans while not realizing that humans have seen the Aliens before.

Ok lets say the the AvP universe is not a spinoff, and in fact connected to the prometheus-alien-aliens universe, wouldn't the Engineers have tried to kill the Predators first?! You know, since they can use energy-based weapons and fly through space with no problem to go on hunting safaris, and turn invisible. Why bother to connect the AvP universe? It's a type of spinoff!

Prometheus is prior to alien. In alien they found a Space Jockey ship with a distress beacon and inside were lots of Facehugger eggs. Thats how those came about. That's the origin I remember. The Xenomorph was formed from a specific evolution that I assume hasn't been shown.
So I'm guessing that Psudo-Xenomorph is maybe what laid the Facehugger eggs. OR they could originate from whatever popped out of the dead Engineer's body in Alien?

Hopefully all of that can be answered in another movie!

From what it seemed like, it was a bunch of Asshole Aliens wanted to create some super killer species or something and made many human like planets to grow us on and then send many different forms of the Xenomorphs to the planet and see what happens but they created some super one and shit went very badly for them. The reason the massive squid facehugger at the end didn't look like the one we know and love is because it was a variant, same with the snake like ones in the oil stuff.

So many scenes did not make it into the 124 minute theatrical cut. Hell, even scenes that are shown in the commercials such as Shaw's interview with Weyland corp to get funding for the mission have been removed. A friend mentioned there was an article stating the initial running time when it was submitted to the MPAA was 156 minutes. Scott said he didn't have to remove any violence or gore to get the R rating, but it looks like other things were removed that would have greatly added to the character and plot development.

This is going to be another Alien 3 type of situation. Theatrical cut is going to be a love/hate reaction, while the director/workprint is going to be a much better film overall. I still loved it, but now I really can't wait for the Blu-ray.
