Alien is a cheesy B-movie, it's a clunky haunted house story, set in space. It just had an awesome villain.

I think they did try and not go over the tech of the original. Sleep for the long distance for example. They had just normal pistols and shotguns. And the flame thrower.

So many of my students do not like the older movies, or think they are cheesy simply because they are "not real" looking enough. Go watch "The Watcher in the Woods". the toy car exploding off the bridge, classic.
Yeah, I think Prometheus went out of their way to "try" to make it look like some of the technology was outdated. Major one that stuck out to me was the new cryostasis chamber introduced in Charlize Theron's room. On their slumber to the planet they use a clearly different model, and when the new chamber is introduced they intentionally mention how it's new and ridiculously expensive. Fast forward to Alien 2 and it's that same new model in abundance that Ripley uses to heal everyone and put back to sleep.

I love when art director pays attention to details like that in a movie. I certainly wouldn't want the repeat of Star Wars prequels where technology in the past was more advanced looking than the beat up boxy look of original films.

Not really sure about all the hate for this movie. I went in and was entertained. Sure, it didn't answer all the questions it set forth, but in a way I thought that was neat because

    Spoiler: show
they were searching for the answers to life itself and we don't really have those. It was kinda cool to see that in the end their search continued because their encounter with an alien race who may have created us didn't go over quite well as they thought it might.

Also the Xenomorph at the end was predictable but awesome to see anyways

When Holloway was outside the hanger and gets burned, right before he asks charlize to, he starts to look a lot like one of the engineers, at least i thought. Then when the geologist was outside the ship and unfolded he was superhuman kind of like the engineer? So as someone said earlier, maybe the goop might make humans stronger? Also, pretty sure the guy's helmet-cam turned back on because he was back alive?

Star Wars is difficult to use as a comparison. It's a space-faring civilization that has existed for tens of thousands of years. Technology over such a period of time waxes and wanes. The technology in the prequel series is simple enough to describe, it's more elegant in design than the original series. You can see the transition from the elegant designs of the pre-Clone Wars ships to the utilitarian designs of the Empire. Look at the aerial Clone Trooper transports as an example. You can see a little bit of both in it.

And also keep in mind the level of technology we had at the time the original series was produced, look at what we had in our space capsules at the time and what sort of reference material the designers had at the time to base what technology would like like in Star Wars. This happens in all modern day adaptions of older series. One of the few exceptions would be Star Trek, look at how well the technology in that show has aged with our own technological growth.

It wasn't the same substance. It's been explained in the thread but at the beginning the alien was basically creating life by sacrificing himself and reducing himself to base DNA matter and spreading it to the planet. People assume that planet was earth or one of the many planets where they created life.

Yes that's what he was doing, and the way he did that was by ingesting the black goo. The goo reacted the same way when it was first reanimated when holloway and crew found it (bubbling and spreading like a vein). Apparently though, it reacts with different genetic material in different ways, hence why the worms evolved into cobra like things, and humans turned into super human zombies.

It was very interesting to watch the many different ways the collection of aliens came about, either by contact with the goo, breeding with infected people, or implanting parasites cross species. Glad they did such a good job with it all.

Just got back from seeing this movie. Haven't seen a great sci-fi film like this in a long time. It definitely had the hubby and I discussing and tossing around theories afterwards.

Good write up on the movie found here:

Saw the movie yesterday and i thought it was fine. My only complaint is that jesus theory that i fucking hate. Reminds me of the indoctrination bullshit from mass effect.

    Spoiler: show
Did Chris Metzen write this? after taking a step back after seeing the movie a week ago I started to really analyze it and can't help but think this was a very poorly written movie.

*Why does the "medical capsule" machine in Charlize Theron's chambers later in the movie say "this is only for male patients" but earlier in the movie she clearly states how she likes to be prepared or something along the lines of this machine is there incase she has to hit an "oh shit button" on herself.

*The two guys getting lost that left 10mins before everyone else, how do they get lost? one of those same guys with the funny hair had the map on his wrist console from the probes that were supposed to map out the facility.

*Those same guys that get lost decide to leave because they saw a dead body but he is totally cool when the little "alien penis" appears calling it cute, beautiful and gets himself killed.

This is just some of the really dumb things that happened in this movie, lol.

The capsule was Weyland's, and she clearly didn't know that, most likely because she hadn't used it. Everything else is bullshit though.

I think Charlize knew it was for Weyland, she just didn't say so because the crew didn't know he was there.

The middle is bullshit, I already explained why the bottom one makes sense.

Is it there an explanation tp the whereabouts of the two guys that ran away on the truck?
Ok as a scifi movie but I wouldve preferred if the robot's agenda was openly explained.

Once you see him with Weyland it's pretty clear, I thought that was one of the things easier to understand
