I'm actually pretty content with the R-rating. Less editing needed, plus, if it's connected to the alien universe, that means more violence. The original was R, so it only makes sense to me for this film to be R as well. :D

I've read 8 different interviews over the past week or so, he really can't stress how much this film isn't a prequel (even tho he already said he wanted to make one and how this explains some Alien lore....that's a prequel!)
