LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp will roll out its biggest drink size yet -- the 31-ounce "Trenta" -- in all of its U.S. coffee shops by May 3, the company said on Sunday

The new size will be available only for iced coffee, iced tea and iced tea lemonade drinks in the United States. The Trenta is 7 ounces larger than Starbucks' "Venti" cup for iced drinks, which currently is its largest size on offer.

Drinks in the Trenta size will cost 50 cents more than similar Venti-sized iced drinks, the company said.

Seattle-based Starbucks tested the new size in several U.S. markets last year, saying it was responding to customer demand for larger cold beverages.

The Trenta size will debut in 14 states, including Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Hawaii and Arizona, on January 18 and in California on February 1.

The world's biggest coffee chain said unsweetened drinks in the new size will have fewer than 90 calories and that sweetened versions will have less than 230 calories.

McDonald's Corp, the world's biggest fast-food restaurant chain, has taken direct aim at Starbucks with frappes, fruit smoothies and espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccino. It also has lured customers by selling 32-ounce (946.4 ml) sweet tea drinks for $1 each.

U.S. convenience stores, which have been taking on restaurant chains with an expanded selection of low-cost, quick-serve fare, for years have sold fountain drinks in large sizes, including 32 ounces and 64 ounces (1.9 L).

The Dunkin' Donuts chain around here has already been doing this for their iced coffees and iced teas. Most people I see who buy them don't drop them in one sitting... they carry it around all day like an extension of their left hand.

I've been drinking Trenta sized iced coffees for a long ass time here in MA, so im guessing we were a test market. Yet, news stations around here are saying that MA is going to be the last state to get the cups...... lol

I saw that too, and that's either a) a mistake, b) bullshit, or c) they're limiting the drinks available in this size.

The grande White Chocolate Mocha has 410 calories. The grande Caramel Macchiato is 240, and a grande latte is still 190 calories.

The coffee frappacino is 240 calories at a grande, but the Java Chip is 440 at a grande, and this is all pulled from Starbucks' own website.

You're basically doubling all of those values for these drinks when you put them in that cup size. I love me a white chocolate mocha, but what the hell am I going to do with 31 oz of it?

Now, I'm sure you can order "light" frappacinos, or non-fat milk for your drinks, but c'mon, let's be realistic here.

Not to mention that an average person's healthy consumption of caffeine is limited to about 16 oz of coffee a day (300 mg.. a 12 oz can of coke has 34 mg to compare). One 31oz cup of brewed Starbucks coffee is twice that amount. Fucking heart attack with a handle.

I should mention, all I drink is iced coffee. Even if its 5 degrees out lol
