Birthday Gift For a 1 Year-Old?

So my good buddy's daughter turns 1 this week, and we're having a party and whatnot...but I know nothing at all about babies and I'm not sure what gifts are age-appropriate and/or not lame for a 1 year-old. The mother is a reading specialist teacher so I was probably going to avoid the book route which I'd normally go for. Any suggestions?

Speaking as the parent of a 2 year old, let the parents get something for the kid.

Barring that, there are fun towels for bath time that have hoods, and a lot of them look like animals or flowers or things. Those are great. Bath toys in general are a lot of fun for kids at one year old.

If they're walking, a push lawnmower or something similar. Otherwise, foam blocks or letters or other soft building/learning things that a kid can grab and/or sink their teeth into is good too.

Yes, something with noise. You can find wonderpets toys, or even a set of keys that light up and flash and make noise. Nothing complicated, just easy peasy.

Also, OP, have you asked the kid's parents what they might have bought already? I know that with other parents, we tend to ask first on what might be wanted or needed.

you may get some tax benefit for yourself, but meh, if you contribute like 100 bux, it'd be negligible.

unless the parent/child has a specific gift in mind, a contribution towards a child's future college tuition is not only thoughtful, but also encourages further donations and forces the parents to stay on top of it.

As a parent of my second 1 year old, HONESTLY, don't buy a toy... Chances are the kid has more shit already than they know what to do with.
Want to drop a top notch gift, saw it mentioned before, offer to babysit so the parents can get a night out... they prolly need it. Especially after throwing a party and having a bunch of people over that the kid doesn't care about at 1 anyway.
