Bullshit lol. Cloud dropping Aeris' corpse into a lake was plastered all over magazines. Even commercials for the game used to spam the CG scenes with no actual in-game graphics. Mind you I was still surprised Aeris died, but I vividly remember expecting something serious to happen to her because EGM/Gamepro and TV.

Yeah, this. Likable people died in video games all the time, but the mechanics of removing a playable character for good made the pain so much more real. I've said it before, but when I realized Aerith was gone for good, the tears streamed until JENOVA showed up, then it went from tears of sorrow to tears of ILL FUCKING KILL YOU BITCH.

Honestly, I think Chrono Trigger did it well. Whether you liked him or not, it had a similar impact, but an actual MAIN character being killed off (and not just part of the playable cast and the game being completable without him) was too revolutionary. I mean even in the SaGa games you still had the ability to bring certain ones back via Death's BS but..Saga is a whole different beast when it comes to death.
