I think a line needs to be drawn between the terms 'open world' and 'sand box' here as the discussion has gotten quite confusing.

This. I feel like some people are taking FFXV's open world claim to mean that it will be sandbox. I don't think they've made any such claims? Could be wrong.

They claimed that it was not a sandbox. I imagine the "Skyrim is the type of game it isn't" makes that pretty clear.

No FF game has been sandbox. They've been open world yes, which I consider just being able to travel where you want and experience the story within a certain order once you get to a certain point with different treasures at certain points.

Yeah, though sandbox to me means do whatever the fuck you want whenever the fuck you want and open world means that I can explore more or less freely. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Basically I'd consider anything with interconnecting maps or an overworld to be open world (basically being able to travel on foot or other transportation to explore).

I don't expect XV to be a sandbox but I do expect it to be open world like most RPGs tend to be.

    Oh god, that last gif.

I surely hope it's not what it sounds like, or that is exactly how it would turn out.

I have a feeling it will choose context sensitive attacks when you hit the attack command and people are blowing this out of proportion.
Tabata already directed Crisis Core and Type-0 so he's not new to real-time combat systems.

Type-0 already had different attacks with various directional inputs when you hit the attack button. He's probably just rolling that into "attack" and letting the game decide which you get. Its kinda basic and I'd prefer direction inputs but its not a huge deal.

I have to agree with this. If he goes with the Type-O direction of influence, then there's nothing to worry about.

People actually thought this was going to be a sandbox title? ...How? How can someone think that? SE has never released one or even came close to releasing one. Open world is not Sandbox. The closest thing I could ever see SE doing that resembled sandbox would be an Ogre Battle game that had a similar style to Mount and Blade (which would be obscenely badass), but there's always going to be a flaw with it:

SE focuses far too much no narrative direction to ever make a sandbox under their current/past line of thinking. Sandbox is about you carving your own story. SE has always been about you experiencing and falling in love with their own story. If the two can mix, I haven't seen it yet, and I don't think you'll be seeing it from a purely Japanese company.

Seriously, its like people around here thought that because you could recruit your party members however you wanted (mostly) in FFVI's world of balance, it was a goddamn Sandbox moment. Shoot me a PM when we can drive the FFXV car into a city, run over random NPCs, steal their loot and sell it to the next town's shopkeeps, before pickpocketing it all back or killing him and selling everything at the next town with 2 town's worth of guards chasing us along the way. While it sounds like a hilarious chapter of 8-bit theatre, that's a sandbox.

    I'd play that game.

I really enjoyed Just Cause 2 lol which was merely distributed by Square Enix but maybe they might have tried playing it. I could see XV going in that direction somehow. How close is that to an actual sandbox?

Dunno who the hell started the shit with sandbox, but lets stop beating the dead horse. Open World = world open for exploration, story limited or unlimited.

I'm not too worried about the combat really, it's the only game element that you can hope changes from game to game to break the monotony of the previous game. Embrace the change.

Apparently there's a lot more to it than "A for Awesome". One of the guys on neogaf looked up the battle system patents that they may be using for XV and basically you setup your weapons and how your party members interact depending on your positioning. It looks like it's easy to pick up but can get complex if you really get into it. Right or wrong, we should tone down the butthurt until the demo comes out. No one thought LR: FFXIII's gameplay looked all that great until they started playing it.

So would I, but SE has never made anything close, hence no sandbox games. I'd love to see an Ogre Battle in that vein, considering the games themselves have largely been about sacking towns and cities or "liberating" them.

Kingdom Hearts had a giant attack button and that was fun to play, in fact that's what the recent gameplay footage reminds me of. Dodge roll with square, spam x, press shoulder buttons and x for magic, etc. Actually wasn't the director the same?

I still think X-2's battle system was one of the most fun(for the turn based era).

Of course there's going to be more to it than press A to win (which is an exaggeration in most cases). I'm surprised any of you took that post seriously lol.

And naturally, it doesn't mean the entire game will be easy. Perhaps the only thing I'm worried about is balancing like they had in type-0. Action games that depend on variable stats (like atk vs def) tend to get super messy.

Uh, its taken seriously because it was clearly meant seriously though there was a bit of hyperbole.
That sentiment is actually going around the internet, he's not the only moron out there, unfortunately. Sometimes you just gotta stop and educate people though.

This for ATB. If party members are AI controlled, give me a good gambit system. Vesperia is probably my favorite combat system of the Tales series, but party member AI has been significantly lacking there, I feel, as you're often outright disabling certain moves instead of having any reasonable control on their use.
