    Nomura Explains Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance’s Title
    Kingdom Hearts games have adopted increasingly absurd subtitles over the years, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is no different. In an interview with Famitsu magazine transcribed by SQEX.info, series director, Tetsuya Nomura, shares how he came up with the title.



    At first, Nomura says, he thought of colours to associate with Kingdom Hearts 3D, and the ones that came to mind were black and pink. (You can actually see this reflected on the game’s website) This step of choosing thematic colours is common to all Kingdom Hearts games.



    “We revealed that we were going to depict the Mark of Mastery Exam in Re:Coded, and we had decided roughly on the contents of the story, but at that point we were worrying over where to set it,” Nomura continues. “We thought about what Sora would have to do now, and about how ‘sleep’ was a key word in the second last title in the series, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.”



    Eventually, continuity from Birth by Sleep replaced “black and pink” as the inspiration for the game. Says Nomura: “‘Sleep’ and the ‘dreams’ that follow replaced ‘black and pink’ as our inspiration broadened, and then we thought of the keyword ‘drop’, as in how you ‘fall into dreams’. (Translator note: Or ‘drop off to sleep’.)”



    The other major concept behind Kingdom Hearts 3D is that of “bold action,” which Nomura has touched upon before. Since Kingdom Hearts 3D, Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII were all action RPGs that were in development simultaneously, Nomura wanted Kingdom Hearts to stand out. This is reflected in the game’s new battle system.



    That having been said, Kingdom Hearts 3D does share a few things in common with Final Fantasy Versus XIII in particular. The way the game handles flashback cutscenes is inspired by the fully controllable cutscenes in Versus XIII, and Nomura has stated in the past that Kingdom Hearts 3D will be host to features that couldn’t be incorporated into Versus XIII.

    Pure speculation here based off of the secret ending, so don't read if you are specifically avoiding watching the video:

    So we know the 7 pure lights are the disney princesses from the first game + Kairi. And now the 7 lights that protect those pure lights are Sora, Mickey, Riku, Ven, Terra, Aqua and also now Kairi as well. So she'll be protecting herself, which is a nice twist, lol. And the 13 darknesses could be Organization 13, but that wouldn't work anymore considering Axel is back to being Lea and Roxas is back with Sora and etc etc. So it'll probably be a group of a mixture of former Organization 13 members who have returned to being their regular selves mixed with a group of disney baddies with Xehanort being the leader.

    And if we DO get another spinoff before KH3 finally fucking comes out (outside of BBS2 which is believed to be a sequel of BBS but still a prequel of the original KH... I think), it'll probably focus around Kairi and training her to be a keyblade master or at least less of a newb than she currently is.

    The storyline for KH3 seems like it could be pretty obvious though. Revive the last 3 protectors (Ven, Terra and Aqua), maybe include training Kairi if she doesn't get a spinoff herself, try to spoil the plans of the evil 13 and if Nomura wants to really make the game full considering how fucking long it's taking, toss in a "things didn't go as planned" mid-point which results in a big ass keyblade war. Fun.

    Iwata Asks Tetsuya Nomura About Kingdom Hearts 3D
    Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has a very special guest for the latest installment of Iwata Asks. Timed with the release of Kingdom Hearts 3D, Iwata managed to get some one-on-one time with Kingdom Hearts series mastermind Tetsuya Nomura.

    This was actually the first time Iwata and Nomura met. Iwata admited that he'd wanted to meet Nomura from some time back.

    The interview began with some talk about Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. Regarding the game's demos, Nomura said that they decided to release these after seeing the strong reaction to the game at game events. Following such events, people posted on blogs and Twitter that they'd lined up multiple times. The staff realized that the impression seemed to get better after playing, prompting the decision to release the demos.

    Have you ever lined up in a line to play a Square Enix game at an event. Nomura may be watching you. Nomura said that the staff watches people's reactions as they view the trailers that are shown to those in line. They're able to see what areas cause reactions.

    Moving on to Kingdom Hearts, Iwata first asked about the Kingdom Hearts series in general. The original PlayStation 2 title, released in March 2002, was Nomura's first game as director, Iwata noted (for the record, Iwata managed to discuss the first KH without mentioning PlayStation 2).

    We've all heard the story that Kingdom Hearts came to be due to Disney and Square being in the same building at the time. Nomura revealed to Iwata the actual starting point for a collaboration between Disney and Square.

    One day, producer Shinji Hashimoto and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi were conversing. Nomura had been called over for something else and ended up joining in on the conversation just as the two were discussing Disney, saying something to the effect of "Mickey is nice, but he can't be used." Nomura jumped in and said that he'd like to work on whatever it was they were talking about.

    Nomura admitted that at the time he didn't really have a desire to work on a Mickey game. The reason for his interest can actually be attributed to a Nintendo game, Mario 64. This game came out around the time Nomura was working on Final Fantasy VII, and it shocked Nomura greatly. He spoke to his staff about making a game like that, but was told that Mario is a character who's known throughout the world, and it would be impossible to do the same thing by making a new character. The same person said to Nomura that unless it's a Disney-level character, it would be impossible. This stuck in his mind as he volunteered to work on the project Sakaguchi and Hashimoto were discussing.

    Nomura tagged along with Sakaguchi and Hashimoto for a meeting with Disney. The Disney side said that they wanted to make a certain type of game. Nomura responded, "I won't make this type of game." This apparently surprised the Disney side, and they said something in English that Nomura was unable to understand, so he went on to explain that he wanted to make a game where original, new characters would travel through the Disney worlds. He was eventually able to get this basic idea for Kingdom Hearts across.

    Sora's birth had some difficulties. The Sora design Nomura first showed depicted Sora wielding a chainsaw-like weapon. It was not well received, with people saying things like "this is terrible." Once again, Nomura did not understand English so he did not pay much attention to the criticism. Sora's final form was eventually arrived at after multiple meetings. Nomura credits the CEO on the Disney side at the time for being lenient, allowing the talks to continue.

    The Next Kingdom Hearts Title Will Finish Xehanort’s Story
    Kingdom Hearts super villain Master Xehanort’s days are numbered. Speaking about the tenth anniversary of the Kingdom Hearts series with Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura said the next game will complete Xehanort’s chapter.



    Snippets of the interview are popping up on message boards and in another quote Nomura talked about Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. He said he dreamt of giving the game analog control.
    Finish his story and start another one.
