When you're dealing with an ensemble cast as large as the one in director Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class," you can pretty much count on one actor or another having something to say in any given week, especially as the June 3 release draws closer. The latest update comes from Zoe Kravitz, the movie's Angel Salvadore and the real-life daughter of rock star Lenny Kravitz, who speaks to the challenge she faced in juggling the physical demands of playing a flying mutant with the performative demands in Vaughn's character-driven period piece.

"It was impersonal in so many ways. My character flies and I'll be wearing a harness and I'd be wearing wires all the time," she revealed in an interview with The Independent. "Then I'd have to stand in strange ways, pretending there are not wires and pretending that I'm flying and floating, like it's the most normal thing in the world."

"Also, Matthew Vaughn cares about the drama, it's not like he's trying to make things explode all the time, so you want to look the other actors in the eye and connect and connect," she added. "But it's kind of hard when all this other crazy stuff is going on."

"First Class" represents a change in direction for Ms. Kravitz, whose previous works has focused more in the direction of indie drama and comedy than action. In addition to Vaughn's comic book adaptation, she'll also be joining Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron (among others) in George Miller's upcoming "Mad Max: Fury Road."

Kravitz admits that she was initially hesitant about taking on an "X-Men" movie, and actually needed some convincing.

She said, "When it comes to stuff like 'X-Men,' I just didn't think that I would get that part. I just think I auditioned because people were auditioning and my agent was like, 'Please go', and had to talk me into going."

Though our insider does not wished to be named at this point, he has provided us with a few details about X-Men: First Class' action sequences which are being overseen by well-respected stunt coordinator Tom Struthers. Struthers has recently received accolades for his groundbreaking work on Christopher Nolan’s latest two films Inception and The Dark Knight. “These guys are some of the best in the industry and they prove it every time. What I can say, with complete confidence is that the action will be beyond expectations." He went on to say that some of the action scenes in the latest X-Men sequel “go big” and are on par with what fans have seen in Nolan’s last two films.

It also appears that director Matthew Vaughn is utilizing as many practical effects for the film as possible, even for scenes where most filmmakers would choose post production CG work. “They used some of the most high tech equipment I have ever seen. Computerized flying rigs connected to five or six giant cranes that were able to smoothly glide an actor 60 feet in the air... up and down, side to side and even turn them. The fact that they are literally flying (obviously from a wire) takes away the cheesy green screen effect. These guys were able to fly around sections of the beach the size of a football field; any direction under full control.

Our insider proceeded to detail a scene that takes place on a famous ship called the R/V Knorr, which is a research vessel responsible for discovering the wreckage of the Titanic. In First Class, the ship was transformed to resemble a Coast Guard vessel. Here is the info:

"There is an intense action sequence taking place in the ocean where nine Black Ops team members in three small tactical boats approach and attempt to board the other ship carrying Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw and other members of the Hellfire Club.

"This all happens in the cover of night, and as the team tries to climb aboard the target ship at a high rate of speed they are one by one flipped violently out of the boats by Erik Lenssher (Magneto)."

Who exactly is the Man in Black?

The Man In Black runs a super secret division of the CIA devoted to investigating the application of mental telepathy and paranormal power in military defense. He has long been a laughing stock of the Agency because of this. His department is known as 'Division X'.

How does your character fit into the mutant universe?

When Charles and Mystique become ensnared with the Agency, the Man in Black diverts them to his division with a deft bureaucratic sleight of hand. Erik soon joins them and The X-Men flourish under MIB's protection.

What was your favorite part of making this movie?

The best part of the movie was working with the cast; McAvoy, Fassbender, Jenn, Rose. Working with John Dykstra, one of the seminal figures of modern special effects. Hanging with my old buddy K Bacon in London even though we didn't get to work together.

In the comics Moira MacTaggert has been the love interest of both Charles Xavier and Sean Cassidy (Banshee) Are these relationships explored in the script?

We explore the relationship of Moira and Charles but not with Banshee - at least not yet!

Moira didn't have the accent in Last Stand, so I can only assume she won't be having it in First Class?

No, Matthew Vaughn was adamant she be American - despite James McAvoy's slight disappointment as he is Scottish.

Will we get a chance to see Muir Island?

Sadly no, not in this installment.

Were you a little jealous that your character is the only one of the main characters without superpowers?

I was not when we were shooting as I didn't have to get picked up at 2:30am like Jennifer Lawrence. But I am sure I will suffer post-traumatic mutant envy when I see Angel being able to fly.

What type of preparation and research did you do to prepare for your role as Dr. MacTaggert?

I researched the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the CIA in 1962 as this is when the film is set. Production organized a brilliant X-Men expert to come and talk to us when we wanted. He came with a folder 20 pounds heavy with every comic and known fact on Moira McTaggert collated so I devoured that as well.

Are we going to see Moira really involved at Xavier's school? Perhaps as a teacher or creator of Cerebro?

We will see - I hope so. She truly devoted her entire life to the cause so it would only make sense.

Despite a flurry of downright terrible posters, X-Men: First Class is shaping up to be one of the more interesting superhero films of 2011. After all, any film whose director describes it as 1960s James Bond meets Thirteen Days meets X-Men meets Twilight deserves a chance.

An upcoming issue of Empire features a whole host of new images and plot information about First Class, including a SPOILER-FILLED description of the opening sequence. Also, it was revealed that fan-favorite Michael Ironside (Terminator Salvation, Total Recall) is in the film, and that there will be a surprise cameo as well.

Empire got a special sneak peek at the opening sequence – a recreation of Magneto’s Auschwitz flashback from Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000). According to them, after the Auschwitz scene, the film transitions to an introduction of Charles Xavier as a child discovering a young, homeless Mystique stealing food from his kitchen.

The film then returns to Auschwitz where Sebastian Shaw – as played by Kevin Bacon with gray hair and a hipster mustache – is pressuring a young Erik Lensherr to use his magnetic powers to their full capacity. Empire described the scene as uncompromising and disturbing, with brilliant special effects – starkly different from the lighter, more fluffy superhero fare this summer.

Director Matthew Vaughn said of the scene:

“I can’t imagine Thor or Green Lantern starting like that! That’s the fun of it. I can imagine people going ‘What the ****?’ […] I didn’t want to make the kiddie version of X-Men.”

I have to say, this is the sort of thing that fills me with delight. Vaughn is approaching X-Men: First Class as a film, first and foremost, and as an X-Men film second – as he should be.

On the plot side of things – I suppose the revelation that Kevin Bacon appears in the flashback means this version of Sebastian Shaw is immortal or something? This is a bit of a departure from the comic books, where, even though Shaw dressed and groomed himself like a man from the nineteenth century, he was as mortal as you or I.

When Empire asked Matthew Vaughn about the aforementioned awful posters that have been released, he said, simply:

“It’s not my job to market the film.”

Empire also had access to the editing room, and on the day of their visit, they learned that First Class would be featuring Michael Ironside in a small part (so far undisclosed) and, more importantly, a “surprise fun cameo” that they neglected to expand upon any further. The question is what cameo – in a movie where all kinds of random X-Men characters are popping up – would be both surprising and fun?

Last year, there was a report that Hugh Jackman was seen being driven to Jekyll Island, where they were going to be filming X-Men: First Class. This report was later debunked by producer Bryan Singer – but was Singer just being a producer, whose job is to deny reports about surprise cameos? Or was he actually telling the truth?

I’m not saying that I want to see Wolverine in this movie, even as a cameo. I’m just saying – it’s food for thought.
