Inspired by classic Sixties movie titles and prompted by John Struan of Super Punch fame, I've built a 1960s style title sequence for the upcoming X-Men: First Class film.

Set during the midst of the Cuba Missile Crisis, X-Men: First Class tells the story of the first team coming together, before they would become the heroes and villains we know from the original X-Men Trilogy.

This sequence was designed to give a very brief primer on the time period, the setting, as well as show the relationships of the characters in this film, as they are very different from the previous movies and audiences shouldn't be confused as to why Professor X and Magneto, enemies in the original trilogy, are the best of friend in this prequel.

Super Punch held a contest redesigning the posters for the film, which played it safe by sticking very close to the correlation to the original trilogy, and winding up rather mundane compared to the slick trailer rife with espionage, red fear, and 60s hair. Several people were quick to make posters in the Mod, Saul Bass, and James Bond style that I had in mind, so it was decided that I'd make a title sequence instead.

And yes, that music is a very melancholic rendition of the 90s cartoon theme song.

Is anyone tired of dark phoenix? It seems that its all the X-Men TV shows center around, but that may be because ALL of Wolverine and the X-Men was dark phoenix, and I just got teased the fuck out with Age of Apocalypse. However, it feels like anything X-Men related now goes straight toward the Phoenix...

As part of the X-Perts series on Facebook, Edi Gathegi answered ten questions about his upcoming role of Darwin in X-Men: First Class.

Q: I'm not too familiar with Darwin. Can you give me a rundown of who this Darwin is?

A: Darwin, a mutant, is a relatively new addition to the X-Men comic world. Nicknamed after Charles Darwin - father of the theory of evolution - Darwin adapts to harsh environments based on an instinctual need to survive. His ability is called reactive adaptation. I want that power in real life - I'm not gonna lie.

Q: Will Darwin transform into his pale form?

A: Not only will Darwin transform into his pale form, but he will also transform into his obese form, his female form and even his bovine form. Totally messing with you. You just have to wait to see what transformations occur. No spoilers here buddy. Not today. Not evah. No way.

Q: In the comics, Darwin was discovered by Moira MacTaggert. Is this the same in X-Men: First Class?

A: In our film Darwin is discovered by the mutant recruiters (I totally made up that term). I won't tell you who's on that recruiting team - it's better to be surprised.

Q: Because Darwin is relatively new to the comics - did you have more freedom to portray the character than the other cast?

A. I think everyone in the cast has a certain responsibility to maintain the integrity of the characters they are portraying as seen in the comics. With that said, we are actors, human beings, portraying these characters, so inevitably we have to make the characters our own. Bring them to life in our own unique way. Hopefully we strike a happy medium of what's expected, and a surprise unique personal take to really make our characters come to life on the screen as live action.

Q: Did you have to spend a lot of time with the make-up department or did they 'humanize' Darwin (like the way you're seen in the trailer)?

A: Because of all the transformations that Darwin can undergo as an evolving mutant, I am indeed as human as I can be for as long as I can be. That's my final answer. I'd like to use a phone a friend....the extensive make-up might come in subsequent movies providing that all our fans show up like they do in my dreams.

Q: Who's your favorite X-Men character in the movie?

A: Is this a trick question? Darwin. Duh. Well in truth there is a difference between "who is your favorite mutant in this particular movie" versus "who is your favorite mutant and power in general." The answer to the latter would indeed be Darwin. The answer to the former would have to be, gee, I don't know all of them? They are all dope. Love Azazel, love Prof. X, love Shaw. Magneto is a badass too. And Mystique. I wanna date Mystique. I wanna have Mystique babies. Little blue reactive adaptive rug rats. Don't judge me.

Q: If you were a superhero or villain what power would u use?

A. I would be 2 parts Darwin and 2 parts something proactive. On second thought, I would be all parts Darwin, but learn how to control the evolution so it was proactive.

Q: What's it like being a part of two enormous franchises - Twilight and now X-Men? Do you feel pressure from fans?

A: I've learned that you can't please everyone. And everyone has an opinion. Not everyone will like what you do and by that same token not everyone will hate it either. So the best thing I can do for my general overall happiness, the work, and the simple enjoyment of the process is to attack the characters the best I can - taking into consideration the source material. When I can do that then it's much easier to handle the negative feedback. So to that end I don't really feel pressure from fans. I feel pressure from myself to do my best. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I am even in a position where I am answering questions like this. Two franchises? Pinch me, am I dreaming? Don't pinch me I don't wanna wake up.

Q: Did you feel any connections or similarities to your character?

A: I feel like this may be true for a lot of the mutants...they feel alone until they find each other. I think we all know what it's like to feel a little lost until you find a person, cause, or passion to give your life that much more meaning and direction.

Q: I read you were an X-Men fan growing up - were you a fan of Darwin?

A: D-money wasn't around when I was a young buck. But if he were you better believe he would have been my favorite. It was all about Wolverine when I was younger. I'm totally on the Darwin bandwagon now. His possibilities are literally endless. Limitless.

I think what bothers me about the Phoenix is you have this character that is essentially Living Tribunal tier, and they keep putting her on ground floor with the mortals. Phoenix is like Galactus--her presence is a big fucking deal, and should be treated as such.

And we don't need a re-telling of her origin in every X-Men series introduced.

The Living tribunal should be far above Galactus, I don't know much about Phoenix but if Phoenix is on the same level as Galactus she would also be far below LT.

Sorry, it was a bad series of comparisons.

When I compared Phoenix to Galactus, I was referring to how her presence should always be a big event, though really, I should have just stuck with The Living Tribunal (whose biggest appearances in my memory were Infinity Gauntlet and Amalgam). With respect to tiering, I'd still put Phoenix on Tribunal's level, or perhaps a step below.

I know what the Tribunal is, and I meant what I said. Phoenix is pretty much the embodiment of life itself in the universe. If Grant Morrison's take is to be believed, it's the resident medic to life in the universe, cutting out the bad bits at it's leisure and thusly preserving the diversity and proliferation of life.

So yeah, not quite Eternity, and not quite Living Tribunal, a bit in between (cue Inbetweener joke), which is why it pisses me off that they keep resurrecting her to play with mere mortals.

That being said, any time it is used in X-Men comics is because it has inhabited the body of a human. It becomes Dark Phoenix because, when in the body of Jean Grey, it experiences human emotions and reacts negatively towards them. It had never known jealousy, love, anger, betrayal, etc before and moreless flips out. It's personally one of my favorite storylines in X-Men so I don't mind it.
