Different HDMI cables making a difference in picture quality?

Me and my cousin both purchased the same LG LED TV, and both have a PS3. We set it up the same way, yet it seems like his TV is portraying a better picture quality than my TV.

It might just be the lighting in the room, but it seems like there is more... his HDMI is gold-plated and short, while mine is silver-plated and longer... is there a possibility that the HDMI is at fault here, and buying a different cable will make a difference in the picture quality? Because nothing else seems to make sense.

Have people tried out both cat.1 and cat.2 HDMI cables and noticed differences in quality? Or between silver and gold conducting better picture quality? It's pretty frustrating to know that the two TVs are providing way different images, even though they're calibrated the same.

From what I remember, "quality" only matters with cables longer than 2m.

What else can explain the fact that his picture quality seems to be sharper and more colorful than mine? We have had the exact same calibration done to our TVs.

There's no way it's the cables, but if you won't be convinced just swap the cables around.

Cables generally don't matter. The only difference out of buying more expensive HDMI cables is the actual quality of the cable coating. Monster cables are more thick, harder to destroy. Some com with carbon fiber mesh. It's all optional, it all depends what kind of harsh environment you are able putting your HD setup in. (lol)

For the most part, just buy cheap HDMI cables off monoprice.

As for picture quality, with the same exact settings and the same exact TV, it could be the device (PS3) that's connected to the TV or the TV itself. What kind of difference in quality are you seeing?

It's hard to say... it just seems as if his picture is more crisp for some reason. The screen also tears sometimes in some games like AC:Brotherhood, and while using the same disc on his console it wasn't an issue...
I doubt it's the consoles as they are both brand new, but I'm thinking that maybe because my cable is longer than 2m, and it's silver-coated (and probably category 1), it might be destroying the quality a bit.

If you guys are saying brands are not an issue, can I just order a 1.3, category 2 HDMI cable off amazon or something, regardless of price or brand?

PS3 settings perhaps? If you're seeing tearing, change the refresh rate in the PS3 settings.

yeah, but at the same time I doubt that he changed his settings.
Is there a notable difference between normal HDMI and high speed HDMI cables? Maybe that's what he has.

0's and 1's bro the bit rate doesn't matter something is just set different

i used to work at bestbuy and everyday i would see the tv guys sell the monster cables and get fuckers to pay 100bucks on a 6foot hdmi cable
when i would go and buy it at my employee discount for 5 bucks...it doesn't make a damn difference unless you have a faulty cable

the only thing that would make a difference is if your HDMI cable is 1st generation that means it would run around 8bit your ps3 would need something around 12bit

That might well be the case then... I assume monoprice is a good place to get cables from? They seem to have high speed cables, so I would just order one and try it out for the price.

yes also try what someone els in the thread said switch the cables to see if that even works if not its a setting either on the tv or ps3

Uzor suggested checking the refresh rate on the ps3... where in the settings is that? I can't seem to find it.
I did change the RGB Full Range to full instead of limited, however, and there is a bit of a difference as far as color is concerned..

you shouldn't be able to change the refresh rate except for blurays. If you saw tearing on one ps3 and not on the other, you need to change the vsync option in-game.

try maybe your tv? it may be set to 60 and not 120, but when ever i play games in 120hz it makes it blurr and i see tons of tearing

swap the damn cables dude. Easiest way to find out if it's the cables or not.

That might be it, I have a 120hz LG, I might need to turn off trumotion or make it low for it to tear less..
I did swap the hdmi cable I was using for the ps3 with the one I got with the 360, and it's hard to tell the difference so it might not be the cables after all...
Is there a way to change the refresh rate on the ps3, or is tweaking the tv the only option?

you cant change the refresh rate on the ps3 it does it automatically depending on what your doing.

if it tears a shit ton its the truemotion shit turn it off when playing games
