You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

    Cold medicine halp

Ok so I tend to get colds a lot, especially since I work with kids on a daily basis I'm prone to get a cold like 3-4 times a year. Nothing serious or doctor-worthy, just runny nose and feeling like crap type colds.

Anyways when I was younger sudafed was my life saver. I would take one, pass out for like 15 hours and when I woke my runny nose was gone and I didn't feel 100% better but a lot more than I did when I had gone to bed. Over the years though it started losing it's effectiveness, to the point where it does completely nothing to help. I then switched to nyquil, same thing happen though at a much faster rate (worked perfectly -> not do shit at all). Theraflu only did minor help.

Now obviously sleep and liquids are key, and I do that. But I'm just wondering what bg peeps use to pass out with when they have a cold since these aren't helping anymore. And anything that might help stop running noses (as that's the biggest thing I hate about a cold).

inb4 meds only cover the problem.

Exactly. Unless you are very sure that one name brand works exceptionally well for you, buy generic. Often generics don't have all sorts of other stuff in them like NSAIDs or analgesics that you may not need/want if all you need is a decongestant.

Try a neti pot while you're sick. Clearing out your runny sinuses should alleviate some of the constant congestion, and the saline rinse helps deal with any infections in the sinuses or very upper airway.

Hell, if you just want to pass out find some cough medicine with dextromethorphan (DM) in it, take a double dose, and wash it down with some whiskey - you'll be out like a light. (I would avoid this if you have liver problems though)

Tylenol PM is just DPH + paracetamol + massive price markup.

The Tylenol severe cold liquid helps me, but I recently bought the CVS brand and it worked the same, has the same ingredients. But it's never left me feeling much better. Then again, I may just be continuing to get sick because my brother keeps getting sick and passing it on to me so it's like an endless cycle. But for sleep, even though for me neither is really really strong, it keeps the cold symptoms at bay so that I can fall asleep.

What's weird is that Sudafed made you sleepy in the first place. Pseudoephedrine is a pretty potent stimulant (that can be made into methamphetamine). Benadryl can either make you groggy or make you crazy agitated, it varies from person to person. Out of all of the OTC cough/cold medications, diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Tylenol PM, etc) and dextromethorphan (Delsym) are the only medicines that have sedative effects (at least, that's all I can come up with right now).

Orange juice is terrible if you have sinus blockage, as the abundance of sugar will severely complicate the problem. Tea with lemon -- actual lemon juice, not a flavored teabag -- is effective, since the lemon cuts through the mucus.

As an aside, Actifed and Robitussin Cough Long-Acting is the combination I go for. The former dries me up to an almost painful degree, but at least it does the trick, and the latter -- which contains only dextromethorphan, unlike other forms of Robitussin -- does wonders for stopping coughs, even if you have nasal drip. Naturally, you can look for generic versions of either.

For whatever reason Comtrex is the only cold medicine that has ever worked for me. I've tried every medicine under the sun, and none of them has ever done much of anything to help except that one.
