What kind of toys do you have for the cat, if any? My older one has absolutely NO interest in anything but staring out the window and smacking the smaller one around, but the little one is a hyperactive little shithead that LOVES balls with bells in them. She's good for HOURS. (she also seems to really like d20 sized dice...)
Buy or build a scratching post (or get the person that brought the cat home, to do so). I had to build one, since my big cat is HUGE and needs the 3+ foot range, I didn't want to spend 120 bucks on a stupid cat tree either. Every time the cat goes for the door - and neither of my cats like closed doors, it drives them nuts if they know you're there and they can't get to you - just either toss them back out, or throw a ball so they get distracted. Heck, even toss some old shoelaces on the doorknob of a door you don't use and it might attract their attention

mine's 4foot tall, it's pretty easy to just hammer together. 1 2x4x8 wood cut in half, carpet or hemp cord rope, a base (I got 2 2x2boards in the lumber section and glued them together), some joint angles to keep it sturdy. and then I tossed more extra carpet on the base so they don't slip. If you do carpet, glue it on and then nail it down or it's going to get ripped right off.

I threw a ring on top to shove more stuff that dangles from it.
oh, and the circular thing in the top one has a ball in it and a scratching pad in the middle. Little one likes to lay there and smack it around while I'm cooking dinner and keeps her attention away from my feet. More than one scratching post is a good idea (You can get a flat one to hang from a doorknob too)
