Issues with my boss (One month into transfer)

Recently I picked up a transfer at my work from a floor person to a technician (Entry Level). At first it was great and I felt my boss was doing great at training me and always talking about setting each other up for success and how we need to act and work like a team and keep any disputes and/or disagreements off of the floor.

Now I'm about one month into the transfer and he pretty much threatens me and is rude to me by threatening me with a demotion (Or that's how it feels) almost every single day I hear "Do you want to go back to your old job?". Not only do I find this rude but disrespectful as well, and this is not limited to off of the floor occurrence this happens while I am working on something and I do something wrong or the way he wouldn't do it and I take pride in the work I do not the money I make (Maybe that's the issue). I don't know how to approach him to talk to him about it in a civilized manner because I know he can demote me or can me and write it off in my evaluation as "Did not preform" as I am in my trial period still.

When I ask for help with a situation that I get completely stuck on he just tells me to figure it out and leaves me to it and then later he tells me "you should have done it this way" or "this would have been faster" when I've asked for help with a situation. Even when I do offer a suggestion that's slower than his like grabbing a tool from the office that is made to do the job I come back and he has already done it his way and will not tell me his solution.

Maybe I am over reacting but I don't feel this is the correct way he should be training me. If I ask for help I feel he should offer a suggestion or AT LEAST point me in the right direction and if I offer a suggestion that takes longer let me do it that way then if that doesn't work or after I am done he could have said "This way might have been better but at least you got it done".

I won't say where I work or what I do exactly for the sake of him not finding this or any of my other colleagues finding this and passing it on.

Furthermore I understand I'm supposed to pick the basics up quick but even he said himself it took him three years to learn everything he has today and he is still learning new things about what we work on.

Any suggestions on how to handle this situation?

Shitty bosses happen. You just kind of have to deal with it.

I guess he expected more from you and you are sucking at the new job? Hard to tell when we don't know what you do, but set it up?

Jesus, sounds like the same situation I was in with a previous employer. I got hired on as a telephone technician and was told I would have 3 months training with my boss, but it never happened. I went on maybe 2 or 3 calls in two months, and was in a constant battle with my supervisor trying to get assistance. I was always told to figure out myself, or she plopped a 600 page manual on my desk, even though I had to do the call that day. After 2 months, I was going in for nearly 2 or 3 meetings every week regarding my inadequate performance, yadda yadda, and I explained that this is a reflection of the lack of training, and both my supervisor and boss agreed to what I was saying. My boss said that he would work with me more to have me get the hang of shit, but on day 89 of 90 on my probation period, I was fired.

Call the labour board and see if they do anything regarding the threats of demotion. You could always take a dump on his car and tell him to fuck himself and that you don't need the added stress from some middle-aged fat fuck of a virgin telling you that you're doing shit wrong.

Put yourself in his shoes. If he's your superior, but not top dog at the company, he's probably got HIS superiors reaming him out every time one of the lower levels fucks up (i guess it depends on what exactly your/his job/title is). At the same time, some people just don't know how to handle the position they're put in.

As an example, I've been working at a point-of-sales company for about 2 years; starting as a basic level 1 tech and I've moved up pretty fast. They had me skip the whole supervisor position and now (no real title) I'm basically the go-to-this-guy if you need an answer....guy. It's a supervisor's job to help/teach the new technicians and handle any support call that needs escalation. A buddy of mine was a former supervisor, now is working in quality control. Ever since he changed positions, the support room has sucked, since the remaining supervisors are usless for 90% of the stuff we need them for. I'm still friendly with the supervisors; I make it pretty well known to them when they fuck up (which is fairly often) but none of them make any effort at improving. Technically they're only REQUIRED to do so much (keep customer response time down, etc) so as long as they keep doing that, they'll keep their jobs. In the end, I'm basically the one calling the shots and getting the new trainees what they need, and the supervisors just float on by.

Long story short: some people just suck to work with, and in my experience it tends to be the person in the supervisor position. He's not required to be nice to you, and assuming he has more than just YOU to worry about, he can always use that as an excuse. try to branch out and make friends with someone else at the company in your position; chances are they have the same answers you need.

If all else fails go bitch to the human resources dpt if you have one. They're pretty much required to take some sort of action if it's a legitimate claim. No ultimatums unless you don't really care about the job.

"you should have done it this way" or "this would have been faster" - perfectly acceptable
"Do you want to go back to your old job?" - fucking flaming cannon fodder for HR department

Worst part... Its just me and him.

Which means if I report anything I'm the only one that could have done it.

Speaking as management and having dealt with this from both sides I shall put on my other hat here. The fact that you are in your intro period means that he can pretty much cut you lose with absolutely no negative repercussions from an HR standpoint. That's why it's an intro period. Now speaking as a boss who(I like to think) isn't an asshole, he's creating a hostile work environment for you which severely impacts your job performance. Unless other people have seen this occur and would be willing to verify your claims you don't have a leg to stand on. HR would perform a cursory "investigation" which would basically be them asking him if he's out of line. It sounds like this guy did not want you for his team and is letting you know that. The next time he hits you with something ask him calmly and respectfully(even if you don't respect him) what he would do in this particular situation. This shows him that you're willing to listen to him and hear his thoughts on any particular issue. It could also be that he's attempting to assert his "power" as your supervisor. Maybe he's a cocksucker who likes to have his ego stroked by the new guy. Regardless this should not be done. If anyone was willing to back up your claims this could turn into a costly lawsuit. It also wouldn't hurt to keep a running log of your run ins with him to show if things hit the fan. If he has a direct supervisor I would not go running off to him/her unless this issue gets out of control. He sounds like the kind of guy that would flip shit if he found out you went behind his back.

Long story short, ego stroke. Then if that doesn't alleviate the issue do your job to the best of your ability and let work/stats speak for themselves.

    More effective than you'd think.

Ever heard of "being set up to fail?" Not saying this is what's happening to you, but it's always something to consider. I've seen it done many times in my place of employment.

If things were great at first and then he suddenly changed, there may be other factors at play here that you can't see. I would say ride out your trial period, and then try to talk to him about it. Ask about what you can do to improve the synergy between the both of you.

If he doesn't want to open up and is still being a pill, then you have three choices: 1) get witnesses to the problem and then go over his head, 2) strive to excel and give him no reason for doubt, 3) find someplace else to work.

While I know what Qalbert actually meant, you most certainly do not have to just deal with it. Bad bosses don't have to be tolerated, ever.

He probably just separated from his wife.

Solution: Offer to release his tension. Instant promotion.

I actually confronted him head on after one time where I was moving a very heavy machine by hand on a floor with customers on it. I didn't know how to approach the situation and hes saying "Just staring at them isn't going to move them" after the whole thing was over I was completely pissed off and he could tell when we got back into the repair room he asked about it and I told him about everything so I'm hoping everything improves from that point on.
