    Because it's way easier to bullshit your way through psychology than chemistry/physics/medicine and you still get the Dr in front of your name.

    I have ESP because I can predict what stupid people are going to say before they speak.

    Where is my cookie?

    I bet I could round up 1000 people and about half of them could guess the result of a coin flip, too.

    As for the "risk takers", they're probably just good at reading a situation (and people), and making an educated decision as to how to proceed. The difference between them and people who play it safe is that risk takers trust their decisions and go through with it, where as people who play it safe don't.

    Some people are better able to read more from their environment (consciously or subconsciously), have more appropriate past experiences to draw from, and can assimilate that peripheral information into their decisions in order to accurately anticipate real world situations. Which is an entirely different thing than being able to predict the outcome of a truly random event where there is no environment or experience to draw from.

    So they're calling an Educated Guess ESP now? This is so incredibly fucking stupid.

    That Humans are especially good at learning from past experiences and using that to make predictions of the future at a better-than-random probability has been well known for decades... It's called Learning and has nothing to do with a "sixth sense", which is a misnomer anyway considering we can actually have anywhere up 16 senses depending on which definition you use.

    Someone make a Philoso-raptor poster saying: If a Psychology Journal is Peer-reviewed, does that make it real science?

    It's CBS news. I'd like to see the actual article. You notice that they don't quote any of the authors actually saying ESP. The people talking about it also don't say ESP, and they are also commentators and not the authors. In classic science-reporting fashion, there's no indication of which volume of the journal the study is in. I suppose the most recent? No mention of the specifics of their methods, no p or r^2, no mention of what the hypothesis is...Why do people even bother reading news articles like this one?

    Yay stupid sensationalism from a shit news source.

    My summary of the article:
    53% of 1,000 people guessed a random thing right.
    conclusion: 3% of people have esp!

    as far as being able to predict which way a die will roll, or which card will be the first one pulled from a freshly-shuffled deck, that's not possible under any stretch of the imagination.
    This. I've always assumed people have the ability to make educated guesses about the situation around them. I believe it's been a vital ability to have for survival, such as "Shit, there's a huge fucking train coming towards me, maybe I should step off of the tracks". Those that do not possess that ability die - it's what one may call the Darwin Prize.

    Just because I have the ability to predict the outcome of playing chicken race with a train, does not mean I have the ability to see in to the future. We just remember past experience to make a threat assessment of the situation around us in order to act on it. It's why generalization exists.

    Yes, my grandma could see her future in her dreams, me to a certain extent, and they are very very rare. Sometimes I have a dream of a room or a place, or me picking up an object in the store, a few months later I see that room or object and it is usually of a slight significance. And I also have the ability to remember every single of my dreams in "HD" lol, which could be a curse or a fortune depending on how you see it, cuz not all dreams are pleasant >.<;

    deja vu. you never saw these things in your dreams, but you "remembered" dreams that never happened later.

    I know you won't believe me, and I'm not trying to convince you, just putting the most likely explanation out there. we have an exceedingly strong urge to believe that our memories are infallible when they are quite the opposite.
