@Edelweiss I do remember Richard Engel saying that too. I wonder how he is doing. It was pretty cool seeing him escort Brian Williams around dt Cairo especially when they got caught in the civilian-run checkpoint. So basically the pro-Mubarak ppl are astro-turfed but I wonder if they are any of the prisoners.

I can tell the difference just having watched this shit 24-7 for the past weeks [got lotsa spare time lol] that there is a MASSIVE attitude difference between the pro and anti ppl.

One other thing. Earlier this week when the army first came in, one of the reporters said that the army is not trained in any people management type things only offensive shit. I guess this is odd to me being that I do not know about armies in other countries because I am used to seeing the US army doing nation building type things and naively assumed other armies knew this stuff.

Perhaps some one here with knowledge of military can help me out here.

I don't know that policing/peace-keeping is necesarily something most armies do; more often than not, it seems to come after-the-fact and maybe something "unique" to afew western militaries given how they're used.

Lots of reports that the pro-Mubarak crowds that have been forming are actually armed thugs and police (they've been flashing their IDs on Al Jazeera and CNN) and that the army simply allowed them to walk into the square without any restriction to start beating on the crowd of protestors, who for the most part VOLUNTEERED to be searched & stripped of any weapons.

This now gives the army a reason to clamp down on all protest activity. Looks like Mubarak's playing his trump card.

Yep. Richard Engel was just on MSNBC, stating that the pro-Mubarak thugs in their buses were allowed to go through military checkpoints, without even slowing. Let alone being frisked for weapons.

CNN is this middling, unsatisfying, useless thing. CNN International however, is infinitely better.

And it's likely not a a DDoS (who would, besides certain governments?), but rather their inability to simply handle the fuckload of influx of people trying to get information/video. AJ has certainly risen to prominence throughout these uprisings, so this isn't really surprising.

If you consider that AJ eng has to perform like ninjas in order to get reports and still refuse to stop working after being arrested and having their shit seized, I admire them the most. Democracy now also has good info. As for major networks, as long as Richard Engel is saying things, knowing his background and his knowledge of the culture and language with a close relation to the people, I trust him.

its partially the fault of US cable providers who refuse to carry Al Jazeera English so you can only get it in DC or Vermont. Seems like whenever something goes down in the Middle East they are the ones with the best reporting. In 2009 they were the only ones allowed to film in Gaza too iirc.

I think it's probably more accurate to really say that the violence was stirred up to precipitate (and justify) a government crackdown..atleast to the few supporters the government has left. Virtually everyone, and history itself, already knows that it's all a load of bullshit.

I'm sure this is true for a handful, however I suspect that the rather comparitively small group (roughly a thousand?) that Mubarak's political party/government could muster are really just the die-hards, police, etc. in plain clothes. Though with the grueling poverty in Egypt, i'm sure a meal is a serious motivator for someone who doesn't strongly feel for the revolutionaries.
