Egypt crisis: President Hosni Mubarak resigns as leader

Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down as president of Egypt.

Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement in a brief statement on state TV.

It came as thousands massed in Cairo and other Egyptian cities for an 18th day of protest to demand Mr Mubarak's resignation.

Protesters responded by cheering, waving flags, embracing and sounding car horns. "The people have brought down the regime," they chanted.

Mr Suleiman said Mr Mubarak had handed power to the high command of the armed forces.

"In the name of God the merciful, the compassionate, citizens, during these very difficult circumstances Egypt is going through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down from the office of president of the republic and has charged the high council of the armed forces to administer the affairs of the country," he said.

I really hope this revolution doesn't get hijacked and Suleiman ends up running the country.

Although he didn't say it specifically in his statement it implies that he's out on his ear too now his position has no powers. He was just the face of the regime that was used to make the statement so ppl knew they were really gone.

It's great. And I think they were going to win their independence from Mubarak once it all began. Right now, its just a very dangerous time. It's not just about Egypt, it's about the entire ME and blah blah blah. So everyone's going to be playing chess in the middle of this revolution.

I'm honestly proud that I got to witness such a historic event, not just simply because it was historic, but because what the Egyptian peoeple did without getting violent was simply amazing. I don't think I've ever been more inspired by anything than this revolution and some of the imagery. Today's "victory" (in quotes cause we all know its not happinesss and sunshine instantly) and the Christians protecting Muslims from a few days ago are quite literally the two most impressive thing I've ever seen and honestly give me hope that humans aren't completely doomed.

I know how you feel. I almost felt selfish typing the above, but I'd be lying to myself if I didn't say that I felt proud right now, even though I know I had absolutely nothing to do with any of this and even feel ashamed that if I did not live in a free country like I do, I'd be the exact kind of person too fearful to do anything to help rectify my opression. Even if I just slip back into being unappreciative of what I have days/weeks/months from now, right now I feel truly honored to live in a free country and truly honored to see the number of people that get to feel that way continue to increase.

This is what the REAL "Hope" and "Change" really feels like, that we heard about in those nice speeches. I am still in awe with the strength and unity of the Egyptian people. I can't wait to see the other countries follow their lead.

Before this amazing announcement, earlier this morning the article that got me enraged was about China beating down some more of its peacful freedom fighters and his wife. Mere seconds later after wishing to see China one day be not oppressed I realized that China probably filtered this entire incident so that its people don't get any bright ideas. Makes me sad.

They should show the coverage of events like this live in schools and colleges and suspend classes so at least one generation is properly informed. So hard to get ppl to learn from history when thought from a book and santised file footage. So much easier for ppl to withness it with their own eyes and draw their own conclusions without any analysis to skew opinion one way or another.
