    Motherboard replacement.

My motherboard crapped out on me a couple of weeks ago. Shipped it off to the people I had my warranty under, sat and stared at my sad pile of PC parts that weren't getting any use, and finally got a call back from said people this afternoon. Apparently http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128359 isn't in production anymore...which I knew before I even sent it off.

Long story short: I'm looking to replace that with something that will work with the parts I had on the old motherboard. Got some other minor stuff like DVD drives and run of the mill internal hard drives that should be pretty well universal but if that's somehow relevant I'll post those too.

With my fairly limited knowledge of these things, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128449 seems like an option, but I'd like a 2nd opinion and/or better recommendations before I go through with it.

    Thanks in advance!

The socket for the processor is the same, which is all you mostly need to worry about when replacing your motherboard, but the one you pointed out on the bottom says it takes DDR2 and DDR3 memory, which I'm not sure is possible. If you got that board, there's a good chance you would need to upgrade your memory also.

Read some of the comments on there and apparently people were using it with DDR2, so I'm gonna order it. I really don't want to have to buy new memory too. Thanks for the help!

A bunch of AMD board can run both.

I was curious about this: aren't the slots different? I think I completely skipped over DDR2 so idk about it and DDR3 compatibility.

DDR2 and DDR3 slots are physically different from each other. You cannot place DDR2 RAM in a DDR3 slot or vice versa.

    Thanks, that's what I thought.

I went and looked at the pictures of the board and it looks like it has 2 DDR3 slots and 2 DDR2 slots, which doesn't make sense to me but I guess is nice for people wanting newer memory and older processors.

Sounds like a decent motherboard to choose though in his situation, more-so if he's like me where you never use more than two sticks of ram anyway.

It's kinda like my current motherboard which has both an AGP & pci-E slot on it. Had a mobo failure, but didn't want to replace half of my parts, so I stuck with something that accepted my old AGP card, and then later upgraded to something that used the pci-E slot two years later.
(granted my mobo is also a freak and has an upgrade path from socket 939 to AM2. Just a shame AM2 is outdated or I would have bothered upgrading to a dual-core processor on this board by now)

Yeah I assumed it had two of each or something similar but it seemed to be the best option to get my PC back up and running. I can deal with 2 2gb sticks of RAM instead of 4 until I feel like upgrading my entire rig.
