Things like this are kind of why the novelty of ocremix wore off me. When you can't even recognize the original song anymore, can you really call it a remix? Borrow a chord here, change the tempo there, try out some different instruments, sure... but man, some people really blur the line for what I suspect to be simple grabs for attention using a song name fans may have liked.

It depends on the song. If they stay too close to the source materials, people will say "What's the point of a remix?". If they go too far, people complain it sounds nothing like the original anymore. It varies by song, but I think on the whole they did a fantastic job.

How the FUCK can this not have June Mermaid and AWAKENING?! Fucking Awakening, one of the greatest songs in the PSX era. Jesus. I'm still going to buy it because I love Xenogears, and I'll just hope that good sales will warrant them doing another one and finishing up all the songs.

I'll agree part of it depends on the song, and admittedly starting the conversation over a 7s snip probably wasn't the best idea, but it's a point that's rather persisted in a lot of songs I'd sampled from there years back. I still have to sit down and try listening to all of these. In general, I look at remixes as combinations of some of the things I mentioned earlier on top of maybe a complete genre shift (Rock to Jazz, for example) while still leaving the people the ability to recognize what they're hearing. Sometimes groups can mix multiple songs together and make it work, but sometimes that bombs pretty hard, too.

Just downloaded the Humans + Gears OverClocked Remix and I gotta say, I'm definitely impressed. Loving it so far. Motivated to replay the game and emulate it on the highest settings possible on my 52" inch lol.

fuck yessss! really loving it so far, a recording like this was long overdue.

edit- only real gripe with it is the inclusion of the pop vocal tune. which i guess was my main gripe with the original soundtrack, and every videogame soundtrack in general. if there's one thing i'll always hate about FF8 is its' having popularized that style's inclusion in games (maybe i'm wrong here, but i don't remember any other really 'big' games prior to that which included godawful pop vocal themes).
