All I have to say is, Bell's proposed metered shit is currently better than what my family is paying for even now. I'd kill for 25gb bandwidth that I can toss $5 at and nearly double.

Government really needs to step in and start enforcing some 'bare minimum' requirements for ISPs if they're going to stick with the existing system of making large profits off bandwidth packages.

Don't give them ideas, I'm not enjoying the failure in Quebec of the liquor board with their minimum retail price for beer "so it does not encourage irresponsible drinking".

The last thing I want is a board setting the minimum price on downloads so it does not encourage irresponsible fapping.

I work for an ISP, and let me tell you, the internet, mainly the way it is priced, is one of the biggest rip-offs in modern history, and nobody is doing shit about it. They oversell bandwidth, under service their customers, and charge absurd amounts for the levels of service that actually work.

Yes, Aurik, people care entirely too much about maximum speeds, and nowhere near enough about minimum speeds, but if you think, for one second, that bandwidth caps are good for customers, you are fucking wrong, regardless of degree, experience or training.

We're already paying $10-20 in overage fees as is on 20gb monthly (same speeds), so may as well give ourselves a 60gb buffer instead with that money.


Still way too fucking expensive, but not like I can do anything. Granted it'll be $10 less'ish for my family since we already own the hardware that the subscription includes.

im on bell canada out on the outer reaches of their network (i live in the sticks deep inside cottage country), the only reason i switched to them from Nexicom (who just leases bell line space) was due to Nexicom not informing me that they also just gained the ability to provide me with the same service for slightly more money but no cap and no blocking external SMTP servers (fucking hotmail service for bell mail is RETARDED). i have the standard 50g +25gx2 packs that i pay extra for.

only reason i haven't switched back because it's so fucking annoying to drop an ISP and pick up another with the setup bullshit, switching modems etc. it's a several day/week process and both companies need to communicate with each other to do the switch.

i barely ever cap out my net unless im downloading an entire series like i did with lost or sg1/atlantis and even then i need to dl other shit to help reach the cap. have never gone over.

sure the net is a bit expensive and its got all sorts of different BS rules to follow but i have no other option that is really going to be any different so meh.

To be fair, I'm on a wireless connection, and they're not as mainstream as cable/dsl, so I assume the upkeep on the wireless towers is a lot more, especially when they have a maintenance after nearly every thunderstorm.

Anyways, we ended up paying $5 more than the above plan as we figured with 100gb we could just subscribe to Netflix and offset some of the costs we incur of buying 2-3 movies a month.
(it's not like we watch them more than once anyways)

It's still robbery, but it's better than having to keep an eagle-eye on my bandwidth usage. Just wish they'd double the transfer speeds though. 2mbit standard, 3mbit power-user (what I'm on), and a new tier for 5mbit that's $20 more is a bit stupid in 2011. Limitations with the wireless tower perhaps? Dunno, but our transmit signal is perfectly clean.
(well it better be, our unit is up on a 4-story tall silo)
