My PC is getting worked on, so for the time being I am using my girlfriend's work laptop. Sometimes I can run FFXIV smoothly on it for hours, sometimes only for minutes, but eventually FFXIV crashes, and the infamous error message pops up: "Unable to detect Direct X device." I have read tons of threads and tried a ton of options but nothing seems to work. Lowering the game settings to the absoulate minimun seems to increase the average amount of time I can stay on, but isn't 100% effective (and if you've ever run the game on the lowest settings, you know it's headache-inducing horrible).
The laptop has 2 display adapters:
Intel(R) HD Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M
I emailed SE support, and they said since they don't support the Intel(R) HD Graphics, I'm basically S.O.L. Since the game runs flawlessly on standard settings until DirectX crashes, I have a hard time believing there's nothing I can do to remedy the situation.
The drivers are up to date. DirectX is up to date (for better or for worse). I have uninstalled an reinstalled FFXIV and the display drivers, but the problem persists. I run the game on Windows 7. Does anybody have any advice for me, or am I just basically screwed since the Intel card isn't supported? Could I set the NVIDIA card as the primary adapter? I don't really know how that works, but FFXIV wouldn't even start when I disabled the Intel card.
Thank you for any help!
